house Bill H.R. 2200

Reauthorizing Funding for Federal Anti-Trafficking Programs

Argument in favor

Human trafficking is a serious problem that harms people both domestically and internationally. The Trafficking Victims Protection Act enables much-needed U.S. leadership on this issue, and it needs to be reauthorized to ensure the continuation of anti-trafficking program in a range of federal agencies.

Argument opposed

The Trafficking Victims Protection Act鈥檚 results aren鈥檛 very good when considering that few people were arrested for trafficking in the 2013-2016 period. Rather than simply reauthorizing TVPA, this is a good time to make this legislation better and more effective before continuing to fund its programs.

We need to look at the actual results of this program before reauthorizing funding.

Strengthen the legislation, fully fund and increase the funding, arrest and prosecute these crimes.

We need to make the anti-trafficing act more effective; not close it down.

I work in international development and I am based in the DR Congo. I am working on an education project that will be closed down due to the new Trump initiative to combat trafficking by blocking funds to countries that aren鈥檛 ding enough to combat trafficking . The reality is that the closing education and health projects will not contribute to decreasing human trafficking, but is likely to contribute to increasing trafficking. Closing projects will not only have a negative impact on the local economies but the populations being served by these valuable services will no longer be offered. Many people will suffer who have no relationship at all with human trafficking and the sudden pullout and project closure by Americans will also leave a negative impression of Americans. Desperate people will be more likely to want to leave their countries for greener pastures. It is in the interest of Americans to help improve lives in other countries.

I agree that the Act needs to be strengthened, but letting the funding lapse accomplishes nothing,

Human trafficking is a serious problem in the US, and we need the funding to go towards research and finding a way to prevent or end it all together.

While the TVPA needs to be improved I don鈥檛 think this is the Congress that can improve it. So for now, reauthorization is necessary.
