house Bill H.R. 2143

Should Americans Worth Over $10 Million Pay an Extra 14.25% Tax?

Argument in favor

The richest Americans’ tax burden has decreased significantly since the mid-20th century. At the same time, the national debt has grown rapidly over the same time period. Increasing taxes on the rich to help cut down the national debt and increase tax revenues will benefit all Americans in the form of a more stable economy and funding for government services.

Trump’s family is a good example of how the rich operate. He father scammed money from government subsidies for his housing, lost a lawsuit for discriminating against black people and then avoided taxes anyway they could. Then he gives himself huge tax breaks after he gets elected while telling his clueless base he won’t benefit. And of course they believe him and even claim he’s the best president ever. Make it 20%.

Finally a step in the right direction, even though a small step it is. Now what is that money going to be used for? More tanks, navy ships, or to help Americans busting their asses day in and day out?

Back in the 1950-60’s, the rich paid their fair share in taxes. Since the GOP is so hot to return America to that era, it’s only right that the 2 tax scams be reversed and this tax be applied to them.

Argument opposed

Taxing wealthy Americans at the rate that'd be imposed by this bill would weaken their ability to invest in activities that grow the U.S. economy. Additionally, it’s never easy to raise as much money as predicted from tax increases, as people change their behavior and investments to dodge as much tax liability as possible.

Of course a California Democrat would be the sponsor of such a communistic and draconian money grab. As counter legislation, I propose all elected offices no longer come with salaries, health or retirement benefits.

Absolutely not! We need the well off to contribute to the economy not to greedy congressmen who will waste the money. Over taxation muzzles economic growth. Lower taxes and people have more money to spend which will bring in tax revenue.

I am saying ‘Yay’. However, I would amend the bill. Those who are worth more than $10 million should pay more!! For too long has the burden of paying down the deficit been on the shoulders of the Middle Class, Working Class and the Working Poor.

It used to be that we all worked together to better the country and we all shared in the success and rewards. The rich have made it so they keep more, pay less and hide as much of their income as they can to sneak around tax laws. Reduced taxes on businesses and rich and providing free taxpayer money for sports stadiums with no return on investment is why we have road crumbling and bridges in disrepair. This is why our schools are struggling to provide for our children to lear or pay for our teachers. Of course it makes sense that they pay their fair share but instead we will hear words like Socialism thrown around to try to scare us from common sense. When In fact it is just the rich trying to get along by not paying.

Why should they? How about the Government get their act together and stop spending money we don’t have! How about balancing the budget and make it where lawmakers are not allowed to vote themselves a raise! How about making a law that requires Congress to be under same laws they make for everyone else! How about sending Democrats to third world countries where there agendas are already in place!

Most “millionaires” have scammed the system, screwed the common folk and made obscene amounts of money as a hedge fund manager. They haven’t made, created or produced anything that has benefited the economy or consumers so let’s go back to a 91% top tax rate that was in effect in 1950s. Since Republicans are nostalgic to go back to that era I would hope they would step up and support!

Absolutely! A wealth tax is needed to equity back to our tax system and reduce the rampant wealth inequality that we’ve seen in this country.

This farce of a draconian money grab by an ever-expanding, wasteful federal government is completely unconscionable. How about we reduce spending, actually balance the budget, and work toward chipping away at our ridiculous national debt instead?

When the United States was GREAT, after WW II, it was because taxes leveled the playiing field and prevented the privileged few from amassing so much wealth that they could buy and sell politicians. A return to progressive taxation on income, perks, capital gains, inheritance would be a good start. The restriction of money in politics to individuals not corporations would make the US GREAT AGAIN.

Never knew a poor man give another a job. Taxing the rich doesn’t help much at all, but tie up more of their money that could be used in investments, purchases, business-building, etc. Plus, why do we want to punish people for being successful?

If we have a flat tax rate across the board we would not be penalized for making more money. It works out,the more you make the more taxes you pay but the percentage doesn't change.

Most Americans, especially African Americans, have next to nothing. You will surely fail in the “pursuit of happiness” if you have next to a zero chance of ever having enough money to live a life with peace of mind. We can do better than the current “prosperity doctrine” and the philosophy of immense greed as somehow being good.
