house Bill H.R. 213

Should Visas be Available for Cubans to Play Baseball in the U.S.?

Argument in favor

There are already Cuban nationals playing professional baseball in the U.S. — this bill would simply allow them to do so through normal processes without having to defect.

Why is this a question? We as a nation need to stop our fear mongering and get back to building relationships to build a better world

Our refusal to pursue intergovernmental negotiations with Cuba is stupid and shortsighted. So much more could be accomplished for both our peoples if we could find more ways to share cultures and resources across borders.

Should visa be available to Cubans? Yes. And if they wanna play baseball, more the power to them. If not, that’s cool too.

Argument opposed

Baseball players shouldn’t be exempt from travel prohibitions that apply to the Cuban public. Either all Cubans should be eligible for visas or none should.

One person should be treated like another. I’m sick of special privileges.

NO, visas should be available for ALL Cubans who want to move to the US, not only because they’re good at sports.

Why would we waive the normal processes for baseball. Don’t get me wrong I love baseball but that would be unfair to others

Sure! There's no reason to keep them from coming here and playing baseball, but there needs to be a plan for how to allow them to stay (or not?) when they retire. No exceptions for any professions.

There should never have been an embargo against Cuba in the first place. We kept their country in poverty because of a pissing contest between the US and Russia. Now Russia is picking our president an making policy while we still isolate a small country that is not a threat.

Yes, this would be permissible since it is a work visa. These individuals could also apply for citizenship if they choose to do so and become citizens by going through proper channels. However, until they are valid citizens they do not and should not have voting rights.

It can be an option, but all Cubans should be allowed

Why not ... is there a danger coming from this country? There is more danger to this country in the White House right now!

They are in the country to work. They will be spending money in America which will help the economy, and they will be contributing to our country.

We shouldn't be offering special visa options based on a person's career choice. We should just allow Cubans to apply for visas.

Yes. And yes to all immigrants who want to work in the US and already have a job offer, regardless of sexual orientation, race, creed or religion.

No, let them go through the process of becoming a citizen and assimilate before they get to play in childish over paid games.

Our Immigration Policies Need to Be Updated. No one gets front of line privileges. Our elected officials need to prioritize this critical Policy for All of Our futures.

The President would be prohibited from denying visas to these Cuban nationals under authorities that allow for entry restrictions to be applied to certain classes of foreign nationals that could be determined to be detrimental to U.S. interests.

I agree with others who say that baseball should not be a privileged situation for Cubans to come here. We need to normalize relationships with Cuba instead. We deal with plenty of brutal dictators. I haven't heard any stories of people getting ground up and cremated in Cuba lately.

Why don't we employ American Citizens as baseball players? Our country is huge (bigger than Cuba), and I am sure that.there are plenty of good talented American/U.S. Citizens that should be playing and earning money in the big leagues.
