house Bill H.R. 213

Should Visas be Available for Cubans to Play Baseball in the U.S.?

Argument in favor

There are already Cuban nationals playing professional baseball in the U.S. — this bill would simply allow them to do so through normal processes without having to defect.

Why is this a question? We as a nation need to stop our fear mongering and get back to building relationships to build a better world

Our refusal to pursue intergovernmental negotiations with Cuba is stupid and shortsighted. So much more could be accomplished for both our peoples if we could find more ways to share cultures and resources across borders.

Should visa be available to Cubans? Yes. And if they wanna play baseball, more the power to them. If not, that’s cool too.

Argument opposed

Baseball players shouldn’t be exempt from travel prohibitions that apply to the Cuban public. Either all Cubans should be eligible for visas or none should.

One person should be treated like another. I’m sick of special privileges.

NO, visas should be available for ALL Cubans who want to move to the US, not only because they’re good at sports.

Why would we waive the normal processes for baseball. Don’t get me wrong I love baseball but that would be unfair to others

Playing baseball should NOT allow someone to come WHEN THERE ARE PEOPLE DYING & TERRORIZED IN LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES!!! This is just putting MONEY & CORPORATE WANTS ABOVE WHAT IS RIGHT.

America needs to stop punishing the Cuban people. It’s time to lift all bans on Cuba

The visas were already approved in December 2018. So now, with the bans on Cuba, they can’t spend the money they earn playing baseball in their home country like others could. Right? Because of the US embargo/blockade. It is ridiculous that the US reserves for itself (and only for itself) the unilateral right to conduct economic warfare on other countries. But I guess they might tweak it a little to satisfy their rich, baseball team owner friends? How about working on some IMPORTANT ISSUES?

All Cubans should be able to get travel visas to the US. The whole “Cold War” mindset about Cuba is counterproductive. Grow up, America!

Why are we favoring Cuban baseball players over others? Any Cuban who wants to work in the United States should be able to obtain a visa.

Why not deal with the problems of US citizens, from Puerto Rico to Flint MI before this foolishness?

Yes, this sounds like a reasonable plan. It is a very good example of proper immigration policy that could be expanded to other professions and businesses.

I have no objection to Cubans playing baseball but I am disgusted that we are thinking of allowing sports figures into the country but not parents fleeing violence, children fleeing war torn areas.

Not right now. Baseball players should not be privileged over asylum seekers or people seeking other work visas or student visa .,,they should not be treated as some sort of special class of workers/people.

Yes, this would be permissible since it is a work visa. These individuals could also apply for citizenship if they choose to do so and become citizens by going through proper channels. However, until they are valid citizens they do not and should not have voting rights.
