house Bill H.R. 205

If You've Ever Been in the U.S. Illegally, Should You be Barred From Getting a Work Authorization?

Argument in favor

This bill would incentivize immigrants to go through the proper legal channels if they want to work in the U.S. If they can't follow the rules, then they shouldn't be able to work here and fill jobs that would otherwise go to Americans.

This seems like common sense. If you're here illegally, you shouldn't get to enjoy any type of benefit.

It's a mute point. Illegal, Leave, or become legal.

It's only fair to the people attempting to be naturalized citizens. In addition, it prevents employers from exploiting illegals and prevents driving down wages.

Argument opposed

Immigrants don’t put Americans’ jobs at risk. This bill, like all anti-immigrant rhetoric, is a tried-and-true scare tactic by the powers-that-be to make the working class blame immigrants for their ails instead of the powers-that-be.

Does this feel like Jim Crow laws for immigration to anyone else? Geeze congress. Can't we just help people integrate into this great country so they can start paying taxes and help us build a better future?

No, not if these people take the right steps to become U.S. Citizens or are now legally here with a visa. It's like tell a drug addict they can't live a healthy life after going through rehab.

Workers drive the economy. Don't bar people from working. Let them earn, let them spend, and let them be taxed.

A vast majority of us Americans are descended from immigrants pursuing the American Dream. This dream should be accessible to as many people as possible. Obviously there are jobs to be filled so why shouldn't these new immigrants take them if American citizens are too lazy?

This creates even more bureaucracy which would be needed to determine the legality of all potential immigrant workers. This awful bill will only hurt immigrants who have come legally because they will be less desirable to employers due to those legal costs. In essence, it will backfire.

No not at all you should be pushing these people into legalization. We shouldn't punish them for wanting the American Dream. HOW DID WE FORGET THIS COUNTRY WAS BUILT ON OFF THE BACKS OF IMMIGRANTS! IM"ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS! We have families who came here to work and support America why are we treating them as if they are less than? What happened to America being open?

"According to labor union SEIU, immigrants take jobs that native-born Americans leave behind as they find higher levels of education. They also start businesses and buy American-made goods, boosting the economy." This is common sense, people. The more people in our work force, the higher our productivity, the better our economy.

This is an irresponsible way of handling immigration. Many illegal immigrants in the US are illegal only because their temporary visa has expired, and renewing it is an extensive, archaic process. Barring them from citizenship just deters them from ever attempting to gain authorized citizenship, and it does not address the problem at all.

"You should not be able to get a job in America unless you are an American." Not even if you immigrated legally and are a law-abiding visitor? That position is insane, even by anti-immigrant standards. People who complain about immigrants stealing our jobs simultaneously complain that they are lazy bums living off government assistance. Drop the doublethink and pick a single argument to work with. You can't complain about immigrants not working if you're doing everything you can to keep them from working.

It is absolutely horrible to punish people that are trying to live a better life. How about we provide them a path to citizenship and make them legal? Banning people will solve nothing and most likely lead to racial discrimination toward people whom are already legal. This sounds more like a witch hunt than a bill that would assist in our economic recovery.

This bill is the right idea, but it should only apply to those currently in the country. If they are deported and come back legally they should be able to apply for a work visa.

While it's easy to have a hard line stance against this, it's very hard to implement a clear ban on everyone and will waste millions of dollars trying to track down all of these immigrants in limbo.

It isn't fair to give work authorization to illegal immigrants while we make other immigrants wait 10 years for a visa to come here legally.

Sorry, but we need to respect the people who came here overseas legally. Legal immigrants built America, and it should be kept that way.

Think of all the tax revenue 11 million illegal immigrants could bring. And as a nation of immigrants, let's give them a path to citizenship.
