house Bill H.R. 191

Should Members of Congress Not Get a Taxpayer-Funded Pension?

Argument in favor

Pensions are a rarity in modern times for private sector workers, and it makes no sense for taxpayers to foot the bill to pay pensions to members of Congress, especially when lawmakers can increase their own benefits.

Most of the politicians that go to Washington today are already wealthy, and they get wealthier while they’re there and after they leave. . They can pay for their Own retirement just like the rest of us.

Also they should have the same health insurance and not be exempt from the ACA

Congress members terms are shorter than many federal government worker’s requirement for pension. Seems a little silly for congress members to receive pension if they only serve for 2-4 years at minimum.

Argument opposed

Pension plans for members of Congress may seem like an excessive perk, but they help provide a living for lawmakers and their families after their time as a legislator has ended.

They already get a salary during a government shutdown...let em do what the real people do and go work on something else, you know, get a real job. Not as a lobbyist!!

No, we are now in a generation where employer pensions are no longer an option, it shouldn’t be for Congress either

I think they should have the same systems we do. Pay into a 401K, or a private pension fund. Pay into Social Security. The elitist system, and exceptions, they have gifted themselves is a slap in the face to the populace they supposedly represent. They are no different. Many of them are millionaires. A pension funded by my taxes? GTHOH!

No taxpayer funded pension. They should contribute on their own to their own 401 (k). The constitution was not designed for paying lifetime pensions for these people. If they had the pension and healthcare costs citizens have, their votes sure would be different.

Politicians are grossly overpaid and should not recieve ANY form of pension and should be held to the same retirement system as the working class. It isnt the job of the American people to keep politicians in a lavish comfort life. It’s their job to improve the lives of the citizens.

They need to be on the same healthcare as the rest of us. They need to be on Social Security like the rest of us. They need to have ALL the same perks allotted the rest of us. THEN, THEY JUST MIGHT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THESE THINGS THE AVERAGE AMERICAN COUNTS ON TO JUST BARELY SURVIVE THESE DAYS!

This is supposed to be a part time job. Not a career position. They don’t even work as many hours as a civil servant, yet draw two or three times the pay and get a much larger retirement than a worker that put in thirty years. No the majority come out wealthier than when they went in.

They should be required to contribute to a retirement plan just like real people are required to.

I’m sorry but this never should have been allowed in the first place. The benefits package to Congress is quite excessive comparative to the service of which they have provided to our country!!! Such a package should be available to those who are taking the ultimate sacrifice in the Special Operations Warfare Command. Not someone living lavishly back here in the United States who has the luxury of doing their job haphazardly while missing critical deadlines that cost increase debt and waste of our tax dollars!!!

Sorry guys: Cory, Ken & Michael; the absolute best way to bring you back into the fold and to confirm that you are all still one of us, is that your civil service job is truly temporary and you receive NO special consideration for anything. Your wages, benefits, retirement plans are all like the rest of ours. Walking a mile in our shoes provides justification that you ARE capable representatives. Not hypocritically saying you are and then you have all of your own GOVT stuff that our taxes pay for. Healthcare alone would be fixed in a month if you had my plan. Living the life is far more productive & meaningful than living the lie!

In addition to living off the taxpayers, legislators have the advantage of influencing the economy to favor their personal investments in ways that ways that regular citizens would go to jail for. If they can't set themselves up for their own retirements, they shouldn't continue to live at the expense of the people.

The only way Congress can be put back in line is with a Constitutional Convention. Term limits, no pensions, healthcare like the rest of America, less pay etc. They are to serve at the pleasure of there constituents.

Sorry boys but public service should be just that - a service. Invest wisely like the rest of us and thank you for your service.
