Restoring civics as a requirement for middle and high school students can help combat the rise in voter apathy and help increase civic participation, the most fundamental tenet of our democracy.

This is another bill that SOUNDS good "on paper," but let me reiterate: THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS NO BUSINESS DICTATING TO THE STATES WHAT, HOW, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, OR WHO THEY SHOULD EDUCATE IN THEIR SCHOOLS!! I suspect that this bill is geared toward helping the "new arrivals" (illegal aliens and other "refugees") that have SO LIBERALLY been foisted upon the American people, over the objections of many of us, at that! Those same LIBERALS certainly didn't mind using Common Core to dumb down and indoctrinate the children of AMERICAN CITIZENS! I strongly recommend that Congress leave the education of our children to the parents and communities and local governments in our respective states . I'm sure we can do a better job with less bureaucracy and far less money AND without the prying, coercive and "paternal" control of politicians who wish to further the socialist NWO agenda of the likes of George Soros, the U.N., et al.

Before the federal government started to mess up our children's education, they were taught all of this by the eighth grade. The federal government needs to remove itself from education in order to restore our country's educational system to one that actually teaches our children worthwhile knowledge and not just how to pass a government administered test. education is the responsibility of parents, local, city, and state education boards without interference from big federal government

I feel that the Federal Government should get out of education all together. They've made such a mess of it our Country is now the laughing stock of the world

This should already be done. If not what the hell are they teaching the kids? Why did the curriculum change? No wonder we have college students who don't know the basics.

I agree the whole system is broken and the whole system needs to be addressed vs just one area. If there is no will to do that then we must go back to fixing one piece at a time. We can't afford to debate this forever.

114th Congress! Bring this bill back! Let's educate our youth about how our government works! My only educational experience about the way the government works was through the Boy Scouts of America, why did my public schooling skip over it!?

God, not Gov. will fix the public school system. Liberal Progressives and their political correctness agenda has caused this failure.....Period! And don't forget, you can always trust the Gov. like you can keep your doctor.

Democracy requires an educated electorate. People need to understand how their government works or we will lose our ability to have responsible participation

Ensuring that the population is more educated about politics will mean smarter voters. This will be very beneficial for the country.

By not allowing young children learn of the civil rights, we have taken away these young children's rights to have their voices heard, as if the same politicians of today will be around forever. We MUST be prepared for the future congressmen and politicians of the later future.

This will teach kids the proper way to let their voices be heard. It will also help build leadership skills along with teaching them to take ownership of something.

As a high school student, I can say that I have in no way been introduced to anything in our current government. Since school is supposed to prepare us for becoming adults, it is vital that we understand how our civics work BEFORE we leave school and become involved in them.
