house Bill H.R. 178

If You Join A Terrorist Organization, Should The U.S. Revoke Your Citizenship?

Argument in favor

Americans who join a foreign terrorist organization should not be entitled to the rights and benefits that come with U.S. citizenship. This bill would ensure that these people cannot re-enter the United States to carry out attacks on domestic targets.

If you join a terrorist organization, then you are committing treason.

This is a no brainer. Plus it will keep them from coming back here with mal intent.

If you choose terror over humanity you have only one homeland....Hell.

Argument opposed

The key to preventing Americans from joining foreign terrorist organizations is to make it difficult for them to do so. Revoking the U.S. citizenship of people who have already joined won't help — not to mention that this seems like a relatively small problem.

Congress has no power under the Constitution to revoke a person's U.S. citizenship unless he voluntarily relinquishes it. In particular, citizenship may not be revoked as a consequence of voting in a foreign election.

I would vote YEA, if the bill ONLY concerned American citizens who go join our foreign enemies, such as ISIS, to fight against the United States and/or our allies. But I am VERY concerned about the likelihood of the provisions of such a bill being used against American citizens who stage armed or unarmed protests against actions by our own government. Even if those protesters are non-violent, we've seen the FBI send in agents provocateurs to turn public opinion against the protesters. The FBI has behaved treacherously and even murdered American citizens, denying them the right of due process! Stripping someone of their citizenship, life, or freedom should never take place without due process! Of course, IMO, that doesn't apply to combatants on the battlefield, who are traitors who have switched their allegiance and are trying to kill Americans on behalf of some foreign government or organization or individual!

What about those in domestic terrorist groups? Not all terrorists are foreign.

Yes. Call it treason. I'd go so far as to say that anyone who travels to certain conflict zones, independently of any sanctioned organization, without pre arraigned government approval, should be permanently denied re-entry into the U.S..

As in the "no guns or bombs for terrorists" legislation, this bill puts far too much power in the hands of a political appointee, while simultaneously denying a citizens right to due process under the law. EDUCATE YOURSELVES - READ THE FULL TEXT. Since 1884, our representatives have taken an Oath of Office: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God". You representatives should consider your oath before introducing or supporting ignorant, knee-jerk legislation that would undermine Citizens' rights.

What a stupid idea, that only repulsicans could come up with. If we revoke their citizenship, who is going to take them? Oh, I don't know, maybe terrorist organizations and state sponsors of terrorism? Sure, let's do their recruiting for them

Anybody who is found to be an enemy of the US should not be allowed to obtain citizenship!!! Either they join them, or they stay with us.... There is no middle ground here!

If they can prove treasonous activity, they should take action in a criminal court. That conviction should strip you of citizenship. Oh, wait, that avenue already exists. Isn't this just another example of the DoNothing Congress flapping their jaws so they can go back to the electorate and pretend they did something?

Absolutely! US citizenship is contingent upon loyalty to the United States. That loyalty is denied when someone joins the terrorist group.

This should also encompass domestic terrorist groups. If an individual is tried and found guilty of terrorism, they do not deserve citizenship.

The list of terrorist organizations is fluid and change often. Are you willing to restore citizenship as well as remove? Just make it a felony to help an enemy of the state. It already is! Conviction removes much of the rights of citizenship. The due process of law as the constitution says.

Yes, without a doubt and furthermore if any American resident has an allegiance to another country they should be deported back to their country. This country needs to change our laws so that people who reside in this country from another country will conform to our way of life in this country which was founded by the beliefs of Our Holy Bible.
