What is H.R. 1772?
(Updated August 22, 2017)
This bill would require every employer in the U.S. to use an electronic employment eligibility verification system (EEVS). The bill would allow employers to make a job offer only after a final verification by the EEVS, and some current members of a workforce would have to be reverified through EEVS. Those workforce members are: critical infrastructure employees; workers assigned to a federal contract; and federal, state, and local government employees. The requirement would not apply to workers whose employment eligibility has already been verified.
Argument in favor
Would quickly and easily identify undocumented persons working in the United States. Streamlines employee verification nationally.
Argument opposed
At a cost estimate of $600 million over 3 years for private sector employers, the bill is not worth the expense.
Impact
The bill impacts the U.S. workforce.
Cost of H.R. 1772
The CBO estimates that implementing H.R. 1772 would cost about $635 million over the 2014-2018 period and a similar amount in the subsequent five-year period.
