Should Congress Restore Net Neutrality?

Argument in favor

In a connected world, access to a free and open internet without throttling or content limitations is essential for participation in business, public discourse, and other settings. Since the repeal of net neutrality, a range of potential violations by ISPs and telecom companies — some of which affect public safety — have already been observed.

Argument opposed

The biggest risk to the internet isn’t the loss of net neutrality. Rather, it’s lack of freedom for internet companies to grow and evolve with changing business conditions due to overregulation by the federal government. If ISPs do engage in anti-competitive behavior, the FTC already has the authority to regulate them without net neutrality laws.

The effort to induce "net neutrality" is a "fix" to a non-existent "problem". The internet market to date has been characterized by robust competition and multiple vendors. "Net Neutrality" is an attempt by the big users (similar to coal producers uniting against railroads) to politicize the situation in their own favor, by citing theoretical potential issues that have never actually occurred. I prefer a government that errs on the side of restraint. There's always time to get the government involved later if it becomes necessary. For example, the Feds took Microsoft to court over its predatory practices, but those predatory practices did not eventuate into dominance. Today the Windows PC is in decline and MS Mobile is a non-player. The OSes of choice in pads and phones is Apple or Droid. Given enough time, market forces will clean up capitalism's worst excesses. And often government intervention creates its own problems.

Government needs to keep it’s fingers out of the pie. This is a free country not a socialist country. The government has a tendency to really screw things up when it tries to control what should be free market situations.

A free and healthy society needs a free and open internet where people have equal access to all kinds of information! All internet traffic needs to be treated the same. Allowing ISPs to throttle certain websites only benefits the ISPs and nobody else! Bring back net neutrality and regulate the internet as a utility!

Yes. People before profits. Why should Verizon dictate terms to how the internet works when their only motivation is for higher profits with little to no improvements for their customers. Throttling.... no kidding.

Net Neutrality ensures that there is no favoring or blocking particular products or Websites. ISP’s are to treat all Internet communication equally and not discriminate or charge differently based on user, content Website, platform, application, type of equipment or method of communication. In keeping Net Neutrality rescinded, big carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, Xfinity, (Comcast), etc., can interfere with Internet content, picking and choosing which types of data are sent quickly and which types are throttled, slowed or blocked completely. Without Net Neutrality rules in place, ISP’s could discriminate against certain publishers and Web services, while promoting others. Re-establishing Net Neutrality restores the foundation of our Constitution of fair and equal communication that the consumer chooses, not a big business or corporation. #45 has repeatedly shown he supports not the average American, but his own interests, big business and the top 1%, (rich). Big business and the rich are the ONLY one’s who win in keeping Net Neutrality rescinded.

Net neutrality makes for fair competition. Small businesses can compete with larger, wealthier corporations. It will also allow ordinary computer users to have download speeds comparable to the speed available to wealthier users.

Google is a huge proponent of Net Neutrality and here is why. Net Neutrality laws will not affect Google since they do not pay transit providers to deliver content to its users, it peers with the transit providers. Google knows that smaller companies, competitors, and start-ups lack the resources and capital to build a global network infrastructure to be able to peer with providers. They must instead become customers of higher expense service providers to reach end users. This stifles competition in the market, because these smaller companies, under Net Neutrality are subject to a load of regulations that Google and the large corporations are free of. Enforcing net neutrality does the opposite of what its proponents claim. It results in an internet where a small number of large corporations have access to peering agreements with large transit providers ("the fast lane"), and the rest are subject to far fewer options of services and growing and gaining market share. They will be denied the opportunity to shop around for different ISP plans that suit them best.
