Offering Undocumented Students Access to In-State Tuition

Argument in favor

Young undocumented people who earn a secondary education in the U.S. deserve the same in-state their peers get when pursuing higher education. They didn't choose to break the law in the first place, and by continuing their education they're contributing more to the country.

We should give illegal immigrants a path to citizenship, like obtaining a college degree for example. I have known some who are very well educated, hard working and they would contribute so much to the country. Think about tax revenue from 11 million more people.

If you live in a state, you should get free tuition in said state. Doesn't matter where you were born, doesn't matter what your immigration status is.

Not their fault. Let them contribute. They tend to be among our best and brightest. Shouldn't we be proud that America fulfilled it's promise yet again? Shouldn't we be applauding hard work and commitment rather than condemning it?

Argument opposed

Offering in-state education benefits to undocumented students is unfair to American taxpayers and students who are citizens. It also incentivizes further illegal immigration, which could worsen the problem of unaccompanied minors attempting to enter the U.S.

I think we should give these a young people an expedited path to citizenship. Once that's provided, we don't need any special exceptions.

I am fed up with people wanting to give everything away to people who aren't born here or come here legally. People who are citizens should come first; they pay taxes and contribute to society and the economy. Let's build this damn wall and get our house in order. If you want to come here get in line , be vetted do the appropriate paperwork or stay the hell out.

I was born and raised in California and now my children are about to be ready for college. My parents and grandparents began paying into the California University system long before any of these illegal immigrants were even born! I have paid into the system for almost 3 decades and now they feel they have the right to swoop in and get a cheaper education while taking a spot away from my children? This is totally backwards and unacceptable!

The solution to this problem is an attainable way for high school graduates to become citizens, if they so choose. Upon becoming a citizen, he or she would then be eligible for in-state tuition.

It is important we start making the U.S. less inviting to illegal immigrants. This means setting clear boundaries that we will not give them benefits granted to US citizens. They aren't guests here, they are invaders. Those funds should be given to disadvantaged legal immigrants and U.S. Citizens.

Why show favoritism to lawbreakers and to the detriment of U.S. citizens? No U.S. citizen can go from his/her state of residence to another and demand the right to pay in-state fees at public colleges and universities. ILLEGALS -- WHO SHOULD NOT BE HERE AT ALL -- should be denied access to all publicly-funded benefits. Handing out such benefits only encourages more illegals to come here. Of course, that's exactly what liberal politicians want! Given liberals' views on rewarding scofflaws, I propose the rest of us join them and disobey all legislation.

Yes, Americans have big hearts and compassion! But we need to save our charity for American CITIZENS! God is love and compassion personified, but even HE expects mankind to obey HIS laws, and because He is a just God, He has promised to punish unrepentant lawbreakers. Any society should do likewise. We shouldn't be doling out all kinds of goodies to those who enter our country illegally (or over-stay their visas). That is not JUSTICE! That is an attempt to buy the votes of potential citizens. It's bribery! People who want to grant amnesty, sanctuary, and/or all the perks of citizenship to illegal aliens are making a MOCKERY of our laws and doing an INJUSTICE to Americans and those immigrants who enter legally! WE MUST OPPOSE THE OPEN BORDERS POLICY OF THE GLOBALISTS AND WE MUST GUARD OUR NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY ASSIDUOUSLY! OBAMA IS DOING EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO SELL AMERICA OUT TO THE UNITED NATIONS, STRIP US OF OUR RIGHTS, AND PUT THE U.N. IN CONTROL OF OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES! JUST LIKE THEY'RE DOING IN PARTS OF EUROPE! THAT'S WHY IT WAS SMART OF THE UK TO VOTE FOR BREXIT! The next step in the BREXIT process requires the British Parliament to notify the EU of its intention to leave, which will signal the beginning of two years of negotiations between Britain and EU members on exit terms. This could be delayed by the decision of British Prime Minister David Cameron to resign in October, as Parliament may prefer for his successor to handle the process given that Cameron had vocally campaigned in favor of remaining in the EU. Once the negotiations on Britain’s exit begin, expect them to be quite bitter. Every EU member state holds a veto over the terms of the separation, and their own parliaments will have to ratify whatever agreement is made. And because no other country has tried to leave the EU before, it’s likely that it will be challenging for Britain to reach new agreements with EU related to trade and travel — a process that may take years. THE GLOBALISTS WANT AMERICA, CANADA, AND MEXICO TO FORM A REGIONAL ENTITY LIKE THE EU. IF WE DECIDED WE WANTED TO BECOME A SOVEREIGN NATION AGAIN, IT WOULD BE A REAL NASTY UPHILL BATTLE! WATCH HOW BREXIT PLAYS OUT FOR THE UK! THEIR INDEPENDENCE ISN'T A "DONE DEAL" YET! YESTERDAY'S VOTE WAS NONBINDING!

Citizens first, do not reward and thus enable behavior that is contrary to the law for illegals. They should have no special rights or advantages, that is not equality.

This wouldn't be fair to legal residents or U.S. citizens. President Obama used unconstitutional executive orders to create these "Dreamers" instead of comprehensive immigration reform like he promised.

By giving these students in state tuition it means they stand a greater chance of finding work and maintaining themselves. Therefore, they present less of a tax burden on the tax payer, males and females attending college under these circumstances tend to put off marriage, childbirth till after they have graduated and found a job, again, less of a burden for the tax payer. If we are talking about burdens for the tax payer, punishing them now only increases the burdens on the tax payer whereas allowing them in state tuition will have more positives and less burden on the tax payer. Simple, really, folks.

I arrived to the US when I was 9 months old, my parents overstayed their visa and we've made a home in this country. I've never even seen my home country. My family applied for the green card in 1997 and we are still in the process of becoming perm residents. I attended public schools pre-K through high school and excelled in all of my classes. Without the DREAM act, I would have to pay triple the cost of tuition without FAFSA and with limited access to scholarships. I'm currently paying my way through my engineering degree. My situation is not unique. Why deny the opportunity of education to those who deserve it and want it so bad?

Illegal.? Then no one should get in state tuition except for Native Americans. Conservatives forget their roots. Yes help students that want to continue their education.

Whether they are either here illegally or not does not make a difference. They are not citizens, they should not be receiving funds designated for citizens.
