Should Congress Wipe Out Trump’s Travel Ban?

Argument in favor

Rather than waiting for the judicial system to decide its legality, Congress needs to ensure that President Trump’s travel ban never takes effect by voiding it.

Seeing as how Congress is full of immigrant descendants, I find the idea of policing anyone in this country based on ethnicity absolutely ridiculous. What an ignorant, hateful, hypocrisy-filled way of thinking.

Unless you are of Native American heritage, you are the descendant of immigrants. And likely when people's grandparents and greatgrandparents came, there were plenty of people who came here without the proper papers. This is a land that is built by people who came here with nothing and created a community of diversity. The rich men in congress who are sitting comfortably in their fancy suits and their distant memory of what it means to be a public servant need to be humbled and remember that. Make this happen.

Argument opposed

President Trump’s travel ban is well-intended and may still be found to be constitutional by the courts. Congress shouldn’t eliminate the executive order.

What is House Bill H.R. 1503?

This bill — known as the Statue of Liberty Values Act 2.0 or SOLVE Act 2.0 — would void the executive order entitled “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States” and prevent it from being implemented or enforced. It would prohibit federal funds from being used to prevent the restrictions on immigrants and travelers from the six countries (Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen) specified in the order or additional limits on refugees from taking effect.

Impact

Travelers and immigrants from countries specified in the executive order; refugees; and the federal government.

Cost of House Bill H.R. 1503

A CBO cost estimate is unavailable.

More Information

In-Depth: Sponsoring Rep. Zoe Lofgren introduced an earlier version of this bill, the SOLVE Act, in response to Trump’s first travel ban. When Trump revised and reintroduced his executive order after it was the subject of still-pending legal challenges, Logren followed suit and drafted a new bill. The new executive order, which has been similarly held up by legal challenges, was condemned by Lofgren when it was signed:

“This revised order is no less a violation of the bedrock American principle of freedom of belief than the original. It remains un-American, unconstitutional, and puts our national security at risk… Fortunately, neither Donald Trump nor his Executive Orders are above the Constitution. I will continue fighting to preserve America’s commitment to freedom, humanitarian protection, and to safeguard our national security by defeating Trump’s un-American Muslim and refugee ban.”

The Trump administration has defended its executive orders as constitutional, saying accusations that the order discriminates against Muslims are false. The administration contends the order will enhance public safety by suspending travel from the six countries to ensure that terrorists aren’t exploiting the system to enter the country.

This legislation has the support of 175 cosponsors in the House, all of whom are Democrats.

While I am for thorough background checks on refugees and immigrants I believe that the President's executive order will be counterproductive and ultimately more damaging to the USA than beneficial. It is important to me that you act to prevent the executive order from taking effect.

The executive order banning people from seven nations was ill-conceived and targeted areas that are not major terrorists concerns. It was clearly done to discriminated on a religious and maybe even racial basis. That is unacceptable. This nation is founded by immigrants. We are a nation of immigrants. Religious freedom is paramount. Support this bill that voids Trump's unconstitutional orders.

No terrorist has carried out an attack on American soil who has come from these regions. Many doctors, a desperately needed commodity, hail from these banned areas. Keeping them out hurts Americans who need them. Not to mention, green card holders being illegally detained is a serious side effect. The travel ban must go. It is insulting to America's values to exclude whole groups of people based solely on national origin. We have vetting for immigration. We have security in our airports. Most of these people are immigrants trying to get in legally, tourists, or people traveling for medical reasons. There is no reason to ban these people. Let's live up to our American values and find a better, more productive way to keep our people safe.

NO FRICKIN' WAY! Do you Democommies not get enough fraudulent votes from illegal aliens? Now you have to pander to the Muslim vote? If I had MY way, the President's EO would include every Muslim-dominated country on the planet! And it's NOT because I'm xenophobic! Why do liberals oppose the President, who is doing his duty to protect this nation from Islamic supremacists and their propensity for VIOLENCE AGAINST NONBELIEVERS?! And don't give me that "It's not who we are" garbage! Most people voting AGAINST THIS BILL welcome those visitors to our country and those wanting to immigrate, who COME WITH PEACEFUL INTENTIONS AND/OR SHARE OUR VALUES! Unfortunately, that cannot be said about most, if not all, Muslims. Let me add here that I have personally known and liked many Muslim people, primarily from the Middle East. I have also studied their history and language, and I have read the Qur'an. So don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about! You liberals are such ignorant hypocrites! You claim to champion the rights of women and homosexuals, not too mention socialists, communists, humanists, and atheists! You spurn, disparage, and even persecute Christians. Yet, you are wanting to welcome into our country people, whose BELIEFS go against women's and homosexuals' rights! ISLAM IS NOT JUST A RELIGION! MUSLIMS, FOR THE MOST PART, DON'T SHARE OUR VALUES, AND THEIR AIM IS TO ESTABLISH ISLAM AS THE DOMINANT RELIGION OVER THE ENTIRE WORLD! THAT INCLUDES THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 🇺🇸! Those Muslims you want to welcome into our country do not come with a sign hung around their neck that says "I do/don't support ISIS", so let me leave you with this little article: Egyptian Priest: ‘ISIS is not outside Islam, or something invented, they are applying Islam’ Posted by creeping April 16, 2017 Has any religious leader in the U.S. the courage to state such truths? Source: Father Samir: Egypt’s Palm Sunday Terror Reflects a Sickness Within Islam | ncregister.com http://www.ncregister.com/daily-news/father-samir-egypts-palm-sunday-terror-reflects-a-sickness-within-islam The Egyptian priest, who is an authority on Islam, discusses the factors driving the murderous attacks on Christians and what he hopes the Pope will say when he visits Egypt this month. VATICAN CITY — Oil money, Wahhabi extremism and an Islam unwilling to reform itself are the principal reasons for the terrorist attacks on two Egyptian churches on Palm Sunday and the rise of Islamism over the past 100 years. http://www.ncregister.com/daily-news/popes-egypt-visit-will-proceed-despite-palm-sunday-massacres-of-christians This is according to Jesuit Father Samir Khalil Samir, professor of Islamic studies at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome, who says it is false when people say such attacks have nothing to do with Islam. “ISIS is not doing anything which is neither in the Quran nor in the Mohammedan tradition,” he says. In this April 10 interview with the Register, Father Samir — who is Egyptian himself — discusses the main motivations behind Islamic violence, why it’s important to say exactly how things are within Islam and help reform it, and his hopes for Pope Francis’ April 28-29 visit to Egypt. What are the primary causes of these attacks? What’s behind them? Is it primarily to do with Islam, politics or something else? For a year or more, the Muslim Brotherhood were attacking regularly during the presidency of Mohamed Morsi (2012-2013); they were attacking Christians, for any reason. For instance, they alleged a Christian who was building a house for his two children was in fact not building a house, but a church, so they are trying to make problems for the Christians. This happens regularly, but it became much more intense. Now this time, what we hear from Egypt is that ISIS is saying they are behind these attacks, but there’s also support from the Muslim Brotherhood because they were ejected from the political system. The feeling is that the attacks against Christians in Egypt are becoming more frequent and violent. This has never happened before, that they attack so many churches and precisely on such a great Christian feast. The last ones took place before Christmas, and now these two attacks during Holy Week. The intent is probably to attack the president indirectly, through the Christians, to say he’s not able to govern or control the situation. In north Sinai, they attacked Christians and so the government moved them. Now they’ve come back under the protection of the army. In the past month, we’ve had three big attacks, and four months ago we had the attack near the Coptic cathedral. Is attacking Christians, therefore, really about attracting negative attention against the government more than it is against Christians per se? It’s both because they attack Christians without reason, in different situations — this year, last year and so on. Christians and Jews are their enemies, but there are no more Jews in Egypt. Christians are 10% of the population, 9 million people. So this Islamic movement, for six years now, has simply wanted to create a new caliphate, by all means possible, because there’s a great crisis within the Islamic world, and the crisis is turning into violence. What is precipitating this crisis? In Islam they are not prepared nor able to renew themselves, as [Egypt’s] President [Abdel Fattah Saeed Hussein Khalil] el-Sisi said in December 2014 when he took power. He spoke to Al-Azhar University and gave a beautiful speech, in which he said we need to make a revolution in Islam, to rethink the whole system. The scholars all applauded, said, “Yes, Yes,” but they haven’t changed anything in the teaching. Many intellectuals on Egyptian television came and developed this argument and said Al-Azhar is unable to make the reform we need. Nothing has changed. Are you of the view that Islamism is the true Islam? ISIS is the application of what is taught. It’s not outside Islam, or something invented. No, they are applying Islam. When we hear it has nothing to do with Islam — that it means salaam; that it means peace — this is all false. It’s not true. ISIS is not doing anything which is neither in the Quran nor in the Mohammedan tradition. Everything is taken after a decision taken by an imam. A mufti and imam will say this is or is not allowed. This isn’t just a problem in Egypt, but Egypt represents the greatest and strongest country, and also where you have the most important school of Islamic learning — just as we have Rome for the Catholic Church, Islam has Al-Azhar University. And as Raymond Ibrahim concludes in Why Christians Are Being Slaughtered in Egypt: until such time comes that the Egyptian government removes the “radical” sheikhs and their teachings from the mosques, schools, television stations and all other positions of influence, Muslims will continue to be radicalized, churches will continue to be bombed, and Christians will continue to be killed. http://raymondibrahim.com/2017/04/14/christians-slaughtered-egypt/ https://creepingsharia.wordpress.com/2017/04/16/samir-isis-is-not-outside-islam/

Better vetting is needed. Citizens of other countries have no "Right" to come here. Being able to come here is by permission. The government has a duty to protect its citizens, so until better vetting is able to be done, keep the ban. The "City of Love" was hit again today, don't want that happening here.

We wouldn't be here if it weren't for immigrants! We don't own this land. We stole this land. We need to standby and help those that are hurting and dying and trying to flee worn torn countries while continuing to properly survey the people coming through just like we have been doing since before trump.

Please support this bill. In less than 100 days as President we have gone from the leader of the Free World to the Joke of the Free World. He has violated the Constitution by profiting from his position as President in several parts of the world and at Mar-A-Lago he has doubled the rates for people to stay there since his inauguration. Why aren't you beginning the impeachment process?

I am all for the safety of America and American lives. But, I am 100% against turning away children whose only crime is being born into war torn, economically depressed nations. I feel we should improve our vetting processes to ensure the families attached to these children are not criminals, terrorist or seek to do our nation harm. Our country is the beacon of freedom around the world and that is a threat for some. However, if the past 90+ days has taught us anything is that this president is ruling our country through the use of fear tactics. Which has everyone on edge constantly. At some point, you stop living and get used to just surviving the day. As an Iraq/Afghanistan veteran, that is no way to live in my opinion. Wake up and start appealing to your inner humanity. God forbid one day we end up in a similar situation asking a foreign nation to accept our entry into their country to escape persecution.
