house Bill H.R. 150

Should Federal Grants Be Captured in a Searchable Online Database?

Argument in favor

There’s currently no good mechanism for capturing federal grant data. The process remains manual, document-based, and non-searchable across the federal government. This bill modernizes the recordkeeping process around federal grants, creating transparency and auditability.

Lobbying should also be public, we need to know who is getting sponsored to vote on a bill!

The same should be available for gun ownership in this country and it should be available to the ATF and other Federal Law Enforcement today.

Argument opposed

Progress on this issue is already happening organically — there’s no need to burden the OMB Director and HHS Secretary with creating standards that are already being developed by federal agencies and employees of their own accord that will increase access to information about grants.

A federal 'grant' encompasses things ranging from a $10K 'grant' to support a graduate student completion of critical research to hundreds of millions of dollars granted to foreign countries to support the National Interests. The nature and purpose of 'grants' varies widely between government agencies and even within the agency offices. So this question, as posed, is fairly meaningless. I think it would be better to rely upon grants summarized on an agency by agency basis where factors pertinent to that agency are addressed. Also, I believe there should be a summary of grant programs purposes and allocations of resources to address those purposes, which, I believe, is part of their annual budget requests. One thing I would hate to endorse, for example, is title by title listing of minor grants which may have very sound scientific purpose with titles that, while scientifically accurate, may sound silly and give unknowledgeable congress people an opportunity to ridicule them overall for some other totally political purpose.

Who cares about this?! RE-OPEN THE GOVERNMENT! Stop the trump shutdown! There are WAY more important things to do than deciding whether grant recipients should be publicized.

As someone who has worked on grant programs, if this is just centralizing the assigned dollars, purpose, stats on program outcomes, etc., then this sounds good to me. I just would like to know more about the specifics involved in reporting requirements, because most grant work I have been exposed to (obviously anecdotal) is not done by wealthy organizations, and reporting data can already be extensively burdensome to administrate. Sounds good so far, the devil is in the details.

Absolutely. This is a no-brainer. This would hopefully cutdown on misbehavior by corporations and probably some politicians. This would hopefully reveal if any nepotism or cronyism existed or would prohibit it from happening.

More transparency means less corruption. Speaking of corruption, how about the Democrats releasing the expenditures on the false impeachment charge. Itemize each amount and what it paid for, and where it went. Furthermore, it would be interesting to learn the names of the owners of companies that received payment for working on this farce. I’ll bet there are a number of Hunter Biden clones benefiting from our tax dollars.

So, you are proposing to spend more money to know where money is being spent? No wonder we have a crazy spending deficit in our federal government... All the information is available, this is a waste of time and money.

I don't believe this would be nan okay idea! I think Trump should focus on reopening the government and stop focusing on the unnecessary border wall which is really useless in my view!
