house Bill H.R. 1466

Repealing the PATRIOT Act and Other Government Surveillance Privileges

Argument in favor

There is no question that federal agencies were using un-Constitutional methods of surveillance against U.S. citizens. This bill would rein in their capabilities and bolster the civil liberties of people in the U.S.

It's a no brainer. Your privacy is your choice. If they want information about us, they should be 100% transparent on their data and information on themselves, which won't ever happen.

Argument opposed

Intelligence methods that were authorized under the PATRIOT Act and the FISA Amendments helped keep Americans safe. Repealing those laws would endanger national security and public safety.

1984 needs to be repealed. The sacrifice of perceived privacy for the feeling of intangible safety is too significant to live in a police state.

A law that was passed out of fear from a country that failed to see the warning signs leading up to a tragedy. Two wrongs do not make a right.

"Give me Liberty or Give me Death", that's a pretty clear statement. Our Government should protect the American people but not at the behest of our liberty, there are more efficient methods of protecting our security without applying a blanket law over all people which is exactly what the Patriot Act does, we've had enough of the Feds interfering in our lives and it needs to end.

The Patriot Act is a clear violation of our privacy rights. The Federal government should actually have to get a WARRANT to eavesdrop on our private lives.

Government has overreached. People no-longer trust them. We need government protecting us, not ruling us

The privacy boundaries we've set have been broken over and over. In a time where there are reports of spying on American citizens for pleasure and humor, it's clear that reform is needed.

The patriot act was an immature response to scary attack. During the Cold War we had scares of secret agents invading our top agencies, covert actions toppling our defenses and nuclear destruction coming to us at any moment. Never even then did we allow our liberties to be trespassed upon to such an extent. Want trust to be restored in our U.S government? Want unity amongst the American people? Quit the immature terrorist fear, repeal the patriot act.

It is irritating knowing that anything you type will be saved and stored on some server somewhere else. Many, including myself, would suggest that this Orwellian and needs to stop. We are not living in the novel 1984 and I believe that we should stop acting like it.
