house Bill H.R. 144

Should People Not Have to Pay More Than 50% of their Income in Taxes?

Argument in favor

No person should ever have to pay more than half of their income to the government. This isn’t a long term fix for reforming the tax code, but it would offer some relief for overburdened taxpayers.

Who in their right mind would think taking half of someone's paycheck for taxes is a good idea? It's robbery. They earned it.

Argument opposed

This would only apply to a small number of taxpayers, who happen to be the highest income earners and can afford to have over half of their income taken from them.

Taxes are necessary to take care of this nation and all the programs it funds. I don't mind paying more taxes, as long as we shift away from the military and start using tax payer money for the people.

People who fall into this bracket don't earn their income themselves. They make their income by gleaning the proceeds created by the work of other people. By choosing to extract profits from the labor of others, you're also choosing to pay additional taxes. Those in the 1% should pay significantly more than 50% to cover the needs caused by their behavior.

This bill would only affect the wealthiest 1% of Americans, who possess tens of millions to billions of dollars in income! If these rich elite did not pay their fair share of taxes, which is more than 50% of their income, then we would not be able to effectively pay off our $19 trillion debt and the deficit reduction would slow down! Think people, think (especially you selfish, naive libertarians) !

It doesn't matter if this would only apply to a small portion of the population, it's an outrageous demand to steal so much of someone's income!

People work and earn their money, they should be able to keep the product of their labors. To take more than half of what they earn is unfair to them and would stifle growth. No person should pay half of their income. They should keep as much of it as possible.

Income should never be taxed to begin with. Replace the income tax with a consumption tax. That will encourage saving and you can still help the less fortunate by giving exemptions on necessities like food, water, etc.

It's misleading to say people making billions of dollars are "overburdened." 50% of $2 billion is still $1billion. Nobody puts in so much work in a day that they've "earned" that much money. Crumbling infrastructure persists because the people who could actually pitch in the funds to repair, rebuild and maybe even create (maybe? Maybe we can even try to get better after stabilizing?) are bypassing everyone and living in isolation.

At what percentage can taxation be considered as nearing slavery? If more than half of anyone's fruits of labor go to anybody else, then that person has given more than should have ever been given. Furthermore, if any government(s) is taking more than half of anyone's fruits of labor, that is to say the government(s) considers that person's efforts worth spending on keeping someone else around who doesn't produce that amount on their own. 15% of anyone's income should be sufficient to run a government. If it isn't enough, then we must find representatives who are capable of running the government with that.

If a taxpayer has to pay 50% or more in taxes, it's tyranny. Break out the shotguns or what about throwing some tea overboard?

What kind of stupid question is this? We already do not get much value for the taxes we do pay. Didn't the US get its start largely due to taxation without representation? I know we have "representation" these days, but most of them are corrupt and in the pockets of the wealthy and mega corps. I won't pay any more in taxes.

This is just another instance of one group of people trying to control another groups life. Everyone wants to achieve prosperity, but I bet that once someone does they might find it a little unfair to be taxed 50%.

50 percent is just an arbitrary number. If the safety provided by the US military, the opportunities provided by US institutions, and the good markets provided by the American people allow someone to become extremely, extremely, extremely rich, let them give back whatever amount makes sense.

This is a tricky piece of legislation. It isn't a tax on income. This is saying ALL taxes they have to pay including local, state and federal taxes of ALL kinds. So does this mean if I pay 10% in sales tax on my groceries, that now goes toward my 50% overall rate? If I buy a $10,000,000 home do the taxes I pay toward that apply? Does this include the 7.5% that a business owner pays toward their social security? 15% state tax rate? 6% local rate. Start adding up all these other taxes that ALL of us pay and suddenly those billionaires could be paying a lower rate than us! The whole thing needs overhauled. Flat tax overburdens the middle class. Need a National Sales tax that leave your income in your pocket!
