house Bill H.R. 137

Should the President Have to Personally Sign off on Drone Strikes Against American Citizens?

Argument in favor

Anti-terrorism operations are notorious for their lack of transparency — this bill will not only hold the people with their finger on the button more a accountable, but the extra layer of approval safeguards against rash decisions.

The President is the Commander-in-Chief of the military. Using the military against American citizens is an exceptional circumstance and warrants approval by the Commander-in-Chief.

Argument opposed

The President is a very busy person. Because the window for carrying out a strike can be very small, when opportunities do arise, it often won't make sense to wait on a personal approval. Other federal agencies can handle it.

Nobody should be ordering drone strikes against American citizens. That's why we have a court system!

The President runs each of those branches and already approves military targets in his almost daily briefs within the NCA. This bill is another political move to force summon to be a 'better leader' or to put more backing into there current finger pointing. Produce another bill that says killing citizens is illegal, and I'll get behind that. No one from our nation should have the threat of unmanned missile strikes simply by decree of one man or woman. I fear a vote of yes, in order to increase accountability is also a vote in support of the process as a whole, I could be wrong.

The President is ultimately responsible for drone strikes, but he/she certainly has the right to delegate the decision-making to those better equipped to make those decisions.

We're Americans and are born with certain inalienable rights. One of these rights is to not get vaporized by a friggin' drone without due process.

Strikes against American Citizens inherently deprive them of due process. Such actions should only be taken in extreme circumstances, and the accountability must fall at the feet of the CIC. If the strikes is urgent enough to kill an American, it should be urgent enough for the President to approve it.

Really?? This should not even be a law!! There never should be a drone strike on American Citizens! But since this is a discussion let's add accountibility!! So I guess the American Citizens no longer get due process! As a Member if the Armed Forces this pisses me off!!

He shouldn't be using drones against US citizens. What happened to due process? But if he does use drones, he should be held accountable.

Written would be good if there's time but a recorded verbal ok would be just as good.

Why are we knowingly droning American citizens again?! What happened to due process?!

This is a decent first step towards transparency in regards to drone strikes, something which seems to be used with little guidance or oversight.

When the President must obviate his intentions against U.S. citizens, he can't blame some underling for having done so. If we had a president who did not lie every time he opens his mouth and who would stop blaming everybody in the universe for problems he creates, we wouldn't need this bill.

Executing a war has always been in the executive branch. Presidential micromanagement isn't needed however. It didn't work for Hitler, did it?

Killing American citizens without a trial is abhorrent, but until this practice can be stopped, accountability, and documentation, should be a top priority.

As everyone has said, the legal system in the United States guarantees citizens the right to a fair trial. It is difficult to try a citizen who has been blown to smithereens.

Frankly, leave the fighting to the professionals. Additionally, Obama just isn't qualified to make the decision either.
