Should the Feds Give States Money to Study Maternal Mortality?

Argument in favor

Maternal mortality in the U.S. is much worse than that of many other developed nations — and it’s getting worse. This is a public health crisis that must be addressed through rigorous study and federal funding to help develop a better understanding of its causes.

We are a first world country with a third world maternal mortality rate. How about a UNIVERSAL SINGLE PAYER HEALTHCARE SYSTEM FOR ALL, CRADLE TO GRAVE!

It is an utter sin that here, in the richest, most advanced country with (allegedly) the highest quality healthcare in the world, that we have maternal mortality rates that rival the third world. Where are all the family values, pro birth supporters on this issue? Working for ill-considered trickle down tax cuts? A country is only as healthy as its citizenship.

And they need to fund planned parenthood because they are at the center of prevention.

Argument opposed

State committees aren’t the solution to investigating maternal mortality. In many cases, MMRC committees focus on the wrong issues, leading to incorrect and useless conclusions about maternal health.

This won't fix the problem anyway. The bigger picture here is this: Healthcare here in America is among the most expensive, yet one of the worst in quality in the developed world. It's not just poor maternal healthcare, it's all of our so-called "healthcare".

Sounds like an excellent job for Planned Parenthood. THEY get federal funds for “healthcare.”

You don’t need a study! I’ll give you a study! POVERTY! Wanna end crime, address poverty! Wanna end abortion, address poverty! Wanna improve healthcare, address poverty! Education? Yep...poverty! Raise wages! The little people down here don’t care about how well the rich are doing! We see no trickle down, down here!

Given that the US has one of the highest maternal mortality rates of all developed nations, I'd say this is a no brainer. A hell of a lot better (and potentially more useful) use of taxpayer money than Trump's stupid Wall or how ever much money the taxpayers will be spending as Trump continues to try and hide the fact that he is a crook and law breaker.

Too many maternal deaths in a country with top medical care. Find out why and stop it. Healthcare cost too much for its quality. Insurance negotiates payments from $500 to $35. People without insurance are charged $500 with no reductions. People should pay according to insurance reimbursements instead of being thrown into bankruptcy

We should be increasing federal science funding and eliminating tax loopholes for the rich.

That's it!!! Study an issue to death, while a real solution is just one meaningful legislative act away. A Universal healthcare (single payor system) is truly the first step. Stop treating the working classes as expendable, and claiming that you're "doing something" because you have another committee "studying" the issue. After healthcare for all, then study why those women still dying with complete access to quality healthcare.

The feds do not have leftover money for anything. They are unable to pay all the bills as it is today. And if at some time in the future they have leftover money, rather than give it to states, they are obliged to give it back to the original owners, the taxpayers.

Government medical studies should be done at the federal level not the state level.

Not on the priority of expenditures... we must focus on lowering the national debt.

Do this instead of the stupid wall. Men don’t mind when they get a lady pregnant, but they aren’t the ones that can get breast cancer because of it or have their bodies grossly misshaped nor try to pass a watermelon 🍉.

NO, NO, NO, if in the future they want to take on each individual problem and seek that out of the whys... then so be it... but this is a massive undertaking that has no way of being given a thorough examination.... looks like a rabbit hole that has no bottom.... a rabbit hole that would gobble up monies without a chance of finding true answers.... Go after each individual problem... one at a time.

Grants can be awarded to study health-related issues. The federal govt needs to stay out of health research; our state universities receive grants and pharmaceutical funding for research! This is simply a ploy to put money in the hands & pockets of select ppl!
