house Bill H.R. 1301

The $578 Billion Defense Budget for Fiscal Year 2017

Argument in favor

This defense spending package would provide for the operational needs of the military and ensure that America’s troops continue to have a technological edge on the battlefield.

Our military is the only part of the budget that has had meat cleevers taken to it for the last 30 years... It doesn't make sense for us to keep cutting the defense budget all while the other superpowers are beefing theirs up!

You can't have a National Defense using spitballs against North Korea'a aggressive actions or China's military's buildup in the North and South China seas.

We need desperately to strengthen our military, after it being weakened the last 8 years. Not just for us but the free world looks to us for help, going back to WW2

Argument opposed

This defense spending package unnecessarily increases funding for the military by billions of dollars that could be better spent on domestic priorities.

We need to invest in infrastructure, education, and job creation, not more weapons.

Maybe let's not spend more money on military, and instead, oh I don't know, maybe spend it on infrastructure, education, homelessness, veterans affairs, social security, welfare, healthcare, renewable energy, climate change prevention, drug addiction rehabilitation, medical studies, space studies....the list could go on for a while

The Defense budget cannot be taken from domestic budgets that are required to keep the country running smoothly and healthy - Education, Health, EPA, NASA, Clean Air Act, Climate Change, NEA, etc. Building up the military doesn't prevent war, it causes it, and makes enemies, which we don't need!

Let's worry less about feeding the the military industrial complex and more on domestic issues at home. Our infrastructure is crumbling, and we need universal healthcare. Let's focus on these.

We already have the biggest military budget in the world. That is enough. Vote no on this ridiculous unnecessary bill! Spend more on our schools, infrastructure, and social safety net programs. Based on the last election I suggest we make sure civics classes are mandatory in high school.

We should not be increasing military spending during a time when we are not at war. As the wife of a veteran and former military spouse, I believe our military spending should be reducing as we wind down from

The "war on terrorism" is a noble idea, but it will end up being a failure similar to the "war on drugs". You cannot defeat extremism with heavy handed violence. You need to fight terrorism with education and tolerance.
