Should Purchases of Intermediate-Range Missiles Be Prohibited?

Argument in favor

It’d be a waste of taxpayer dollars to buy more missiles to fuel a modern arms race between the U.S. and Russia. Upholding the INF Treaty’s ban on missiles keeps the door open for a renegotiation and resumption of the treaty, which would enhance global security.

We don’t need more weapons so that we can blow up the planet four times over instead of three times over! We have an addiction to war and weapons because it’s profitable in the end. Let’s actually ensure that we have a livable planet and focus on fixing the massive problems that we have here at home!

Argument opposed

Russia has suspended its participation in the INF Treaty and China has a growing arsenal of missiles in that class because it never joined the treaty. As a result, it’s important for the U.S. military to be capable of buying any and all weapons that they need to deter aggression.

Not being prepared and underestimating our enemies is what got us into WW2 , we can’t make those mistakes ever again. With China now pushing into the Western Hemisphere; building bases in Africa, Central America, Panama Canal and the ever present Russia, Iran, North Korea. We can’t afford to not have the best weapons to protect ourselves, God forbid if we don’t. #MAGA

👎🏻House BILL H.R. 1249 AKA the “INF Treaty Compliance Act”👎🏻 We must always be vigilant of opposition “OFFENSIVE” capabilities and retain our “DEFENSIVE” capabilities, which must also include missile weapon systems. THE USA 🇺🇸- RUSSIA 🇷🇺 “INF TREATY” I’m in firm agreement that the answer to the problems that have come up, is not to abandon the INF Treaty, but to preserve and fix it. I’m in strong opposition to and defiantly do NOT recommend passage of the House BILL H.R. 1249 AKA the “INF Treaty Compliance Act of 2019’ which would prohibit the use of taxpayer dollars to buy weapons that violate the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, even if the U.S. withdraws from the treaty. According to historians and others far smarter than me, the United States is the most warlike nation on earth. In our entire existence we have only NOT been at war 17 years. I do not know how we have managed to retain the allies we have as we’ve been at war with all of them. Trump is now showing the world that we are not reliable partners to any country and could not remain in a treaty or keep our promises if our lives depended on it. And it does. Accumulating more weapons capable of blowing up the earth several times over, is not the best strategy for this country. We used to accumulate friends and alliances..We used to keep our word and act as if treaties meant something rather than looking for opportunities for self enrichment through the military complex. How about we try using a muscle we haven’t been able to use in this Administration-Diplomacy which doesn’t involve threats and extortion. Get back to the treaty and no more missiles.

We were on the right track to eliminate short term missiles before Trump and John Boom Boom Bolton came along. We say Russia violated the agreement? So now we are going to do what we accuse Russia of doing? Why don’t we put sanctions on Russia instead of restarting the Cold War?

It is vital we uphold the INF Treaty! What happened to our commitment to pursuing PEACE and Security- throughout our world? For my representatives who has tossed aside the old Republican party for the party of trump, I am paying attention and I'm saddened by the support I hear from you for trump. Allowing trump to subvert our 242-year old principles and imperil our National security and freedoms!

Instead of spending tax payer money on frivolous schemes e.g. border walls, an Air Force One makeover, or paying for more weapons, I would like to see our elected officials use our tax money for education building improvements, increasing teacher salaries, and provide enhanced safety at our schools.

And so should a lot of other weapons. The US is the largest arms dealer in the world and we should rethink that position and not sell our weapons to other countries.

Instead of investing in ways to blow up the planet multiple times over let’s instead invest in making our planet livable. Also, lets invest in our communities here at home through improving infrastructure, fully funding schools, providing all citizens with basic healthcare, returning the money taken from social security, paying down the national debt, forgiving student debt, making college free, and so much more that would make average Americans’ lives better. We have enough weapons and there are so many other things we need to spend money on in order to have strong healthy communities here at home.
