Title

Social Security Fairness Act of 2017

Official Title

To amend title II of the Social Security Act to repeal the Government pension offset and windfall elimination provisions.

Summary

Social Security Fairness Act of 2017 This bill amends title II (Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance) (OASDI) of the Social Security Act to repeal the "government pension offset" and the "windfall elimination provision." Under current law, those provisions reduce OASDI benefits for individuals who receive a pension based on earnings in government employment that was not covered under the Social Security program.
Everyone should get a fair social security check after decades of paying into the system. Even folks with pensions.

This bill removes the Government Pension Offset and the Windfall Elimination Provisions, which negatively affect government workers (teachers, firefighters, police officers and the like) by reducing their social security amounts due to their receipt of pension benefits. The representatives in congress should put this legislation bill "Social Security Fairness Act of 2017 (H.R. 1205)" at the forefront of all other legislation as it effects millions of retired people, myself included. I guarantee this bill would not be sitting on some subcommittee desk if it meant more money in their pocket.

I urge you to support S 915 and do whatever is possible to repeal WEP/GPO from the Social Security Act. Teachers deserve the full Social Security they have paid in. My friend who is now a teacher feels that she can not retire because of the significant loss of Social Security to which she will be subject.

I am over 66 and still working. Social Security is being deducted from my paycheck and my employer is paying SS, however I am being penalized by reducing my SS check I receive. I realize I would not have had a large Social Security check, but reducing my benefits by 60 percent is unfair. There is more taken from my monthly check than I receive in benefits each month. Who gets the money I am paying in each month? This needs to be repealed!

I am in support of this bill. I am not a teacher, but a secretary. If I retire at 65 or 66 I will receive just above poverty level. (I will only have 15-16 years in SERS.) I paid into to social security for 28 years. I am not asking for anything I didn't pay into. Social security would mean I could stay in the home I have lived in for over 30 years, otherwise I fear I will lose everything we have worked for

Please advance House Bill to repeal WEP - my social security benefits will be reduced by 60% from 1280 to 496 - just because I worked 12 years with social security & 21 years as a teacher with TRS benefits. This greatly impacts my income in retirement. Please help pass social security reform and get rid of WEP.
