Should the VA Be Banned From Conducting Testing on Dogs?

Argument in favor

Canine testing at the VA is inhumane and unnecessary given the range of alternatives that now exist. There’s no good reason for the VA to continue subjecting dogs to cruel and hurtful testing when there are humane alternatives to this outdated practice.

Why is this even a question? Why are we still testing on animals? Leave the animals alone.

I’m not a biochemist, but I would hope that the VA can find better means to conduct research without dogs.

Simple. Yes. Testing on animals is being done based out of society, with the power of computer simulations and medical technologies advancing, its time for the United States to begin developing legislation to push out this inhumane practise. And this is a brilliant start.

Argument opposed

Animal testing has been key to virtually every medical advance of the past century. Canine testing specifically remains necessary for developing life-saving drugs and treatments that could help disabled and injured veterans live better, longer lives after sacrificing for their country.

The National Association for Biomedical Research states that one of the most significant results of our partnership with dogs has been their contribution to our understanding, preventing and curing disease. Research with dogs has and continues to lead to life-preserving and life-enhancing treatments for humans, dogs and other animals. Most of the top 25 drugs prescribed in the U.S. were developed with the help of studies in dogs, along with testing in other laboratory animal models and ultimately in human volunteers. The benefits are clear and the VA should not be limited in leveraging this aspect of medical research.

Animal testing is necessary unless we want to start testing on people first. Do you really want to start using untested drugs on our veterans? What humans are we going to sacrifice instead of the dogs? Animal testing is a necessary step. We aren’t going to run out of dogs.

Dogs & cats are pets, not lab animals. No more abusing our companion animals.

I have to say no on this one. I worked at a hospital in college that tested cancer drugs/radiation on beagles and it was the saddest thing I saw up to that point. Cages as long as the room with varying states of dying dogs. That was a long time ago, but I would think there are other means to test drugs and treatments.

Each year 26 million animals are subjected to different levels of torture in so called animal research. Computer generated research or Silico models are faster, cheaper and more reliable, not requiring the use or replacement of animals thus slowing down or halting research done with animals. It is more humane and accurate. Dogs are completely superfluous to any animal testing as they are in all ways different than humans. If testing on an animal were in any way to be necessary it would need to be on the animal most similar to us anatomically and that would be the pig. I oppose all animal testing and suggest you use the cheaper, more accurate Silico methods or human volunteers for research in the future.

Animal testing on any animal is inhumane and cruel! It is outdated and should be illegal! With all of this technology we don't need to subject them with through this torture for research. Of any kind all animal testing should be banned!

We can do testing on human cells now, maybe not a perfect model, but a far better model than any non-human species

Beyond the cruelty to animals aspect, other than being mammals a dog is not genetically close to a human What testing are they doing? They used dogs to test guns/bullets for years Is this still on?

Do not allow testing on dogs. How can we approve of and work to give service dogs to our vets yet condone experiments on other dogs? It is immoral. Please stop the VA from experimenting on dogs. We need more service dogs not more abused dogs!!

Animal testing is painful and causes much fear. Animals can’t tell you how the testing makes them feel. The worst thing is animal testing is not humane or ethical. Animals are treated as though they are mindless slabs of meat with a heartbeat, but they are much like people. They think, feel, they have joy, pain and fear. They get hungry, tired and sick. All animal life has communication, reproduction, and death. What makes them different? Well we aren’t able to understand much of their communication, in nature it’s survival of the fittest or the one with the biggest tribe, and humans think animals have no soul. Quite frankly I’ve never understood that. Many humans don’t believe in souls at all, so how are animals any different? They are different in the fact we are self aware and understand we are just a speck in the cosmos... but because of that we are responsible for protecting all animal life. We know better. Animal testing is barbarous and it is torture. Do we need to torture other life forms to give our own meaning, or to feel like masters over others? It’s not necessary, it’s vile, painful and absolutely not necessary anymore.

Animals aren’t people, they can’t say NO! Stop this now. They aren’t like people so how can they justify testing of dogs or any other animal - it’s cruel

It’s time that animal testing be outlawed. We have better ways of doing things without being cruel. Be human don’t test on animals.
