house Bill H.R. 1135

Reauthorizing Historic Preservation Grants for Buildings at Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Argument in favor

Historically Black Colleges and Universities need federal grants to preserve historic buildings on their campuses, and this ensures they get them for the next eight years.

Historically black colleges have and continue to produce the majority of black college grads in this country and open a doorway to the middle class. We cannot erase history or progress.

Argument opposed

Reauthorizing the historic preservation program through 2024 is too long, and $10 million per year may be more than is needed.

While historic Black Colleges and Universities should be preserved, it's not a Federal issue. Private alumni groups or even state historical societies can participate. Federal tax money being provided via the Park System sounds like a money grab fest of public funds.

No. Black Universities perpetuate de facto segregation thus undermining the unity of the American People.

While I support the preservation of historic buildings, funding should go to all universities for this issue, not just specific ones.

First of all, the States are supposed to control and allocate funds to public colleges and universities. Secondly, how is it okay to prioritize funding to a school just because of the ethnic majority? People will complain about equality and white privilege and then go and support a measure that favors one race over another.

Alumni associations and states should be handling the funding not the Federal government. Taxpayers no matter what color do not need to foot the bill.

This isn't the federal governments role. Let alumni and donors take care of this stuff.

Grants to maintain buildings used for education should be continued. These grants are often matched my private donors so it encourages ongoing support of educational institutions.

This bill shouldn't even be a question. Re-authorize.

What excuse, besides racism, could there possibly be to *specifically target* the history of race relations and education in this country for delegitimization?

If an authorization for white universities came up, people would be crying "racism". We are all Americans and it's time to treat everyone as such. Does America have a dark past? Yes of course it does. But the segregation of feelings and apologies needs to stop. If blacks feel they are being treated unfairly, go visit an Indian reservation. Try living the way our native population has been forced to for the past century.

How is it even a question to do this? Of course! Despicable to think/realize/know there will be people against this. But that is sadly where we remain in America. Some of the "nay" comments are deplorable here.

No, they shouldn't be renewed because of discrimination. If a college was "historically white" & only accepted enrollments by white students it would be charged as racist. Why are "black colleges" not held to the same standard?

This is a small move that sends a big message of support. Please honor our complicated history and fund the historically black colleges that continue to do great work in this country.

This appears in direct opposition to those who want to remove all of what remains of our past - but according to only THEIR criteria. If not good for one - then nix on the other. We should preserve ALL historical monuments/blogs/sites. They are all part of the tapestry that is America!
