Should Congress’s August Recess Be Canceled if a Budget Hasn’t Been Adopted?

Argument in favor

Congress’s failure to pass budgets — and its reliance on continuing resolutions — is inefficient, expensive, and irresponsible. The current process wastes time and money and risks government shutdowns when impasses aren’t resolved. Requiring Congress to pass a budget before it can break for its August recess would incentivize members to strike the necessary compromises to pass budgets on a reasonable timeline.

As a matter of fact the average working American works 2080 hours a year. I think Congress should work the same

Should be cancelled regardless! How many working people in the US get a month off from work paid? Not only should they resolve the budget but take meaningful action on mass murder considering the 2 this w/e in Texas & Ohio!

Argument opposed

When Congress fails to pass a budget by its April 15 deadline, it’s often due to substantive — and understandable — disagreements between members as to the government’s funding priorities. Forcing Congress to race toward a budget in order to break for its August recess puts undue pressure on members to gloss over their policy disagreements in favor of passing a budget which is bad for long-term good governance.

Sorry. This is just another stunt to get some ‘creds’ by proposing useless legislation that sounds good but has no chance of being adopted. Find another way to have an election year claim that you actually did something; perhaps, by actually doing something that is credit-worthy. Other Congressman have made plans to meet with constituents or do things to support their base and have already left or on their way- so you have to know your proposed legislation is DOA. I for one, resent you trying to trick anyone into thinking that you are doing your job or doing anything actually of value for our country.

We haven’t had a real budget passed by Congress since 1997. It’s all been continuous resolutions. Why are you wailing about it now? Fix the process instead of this childish tantrum. If a budget doesn’t get passed, we use the old one until we get a new one.

If this is going to force members of Congress to pass a crappy budget then no, this should not be passed. The way Washington spends money should always be scrutinized and rushing to pass a budget is never a good idea. In order to avoid government shutdowns, the previous budget should be used with adjustments made for inflation which Congress can update as time goes on.

It would be great to have representatives and Senators who actually represent what WE THE PEOPLE want.

Congress should not be adjourned, and the flag left at half mast, until we take measures against our senseless gun violence epidemic.

I’m with burrkitty and jimk on this one. Appears to be showboating or grandstanding giving the misperception their doing something beneficial. Passing an updated budget shouldn’t be rushed or rammed through for the sake of heading back to their home districts. On another note, think about this for a second. How many unpopular repugnant asshats really want to go back to their home district? Having to hold town halls while being mocked and protested against by their constituents. Could be a ploy to avoid dealing with reality at home.

👍🏻👍🏻 House Bill H.R. 1059 AKA the No Budget, No Recess Act 👍🏻👍🏻 I strongly recommend and support the passage of this House Bill H.R. 1059 AKA the No Budget, No Recess Act which would prohibit members of Congress from leaving Washington, D.C. if they fail to pass a budget by April 15 or approve regular spending bills by August 1. Thus, Congress wouldn’t be able to adjourn for its August recess until its work is completed. Congress’s failure to pass budgets — and its reliance on continuing resolutions — is inefficient, expensive, and irresponsible. The current process wastes time and money and risks government shutdowns when impasses aren’t resolved. Funny how the republicans never cared about this until the democrats took the house. If they worked with the democrats then maybe a budget could get passed on time.

No recess until the budget is done. In any business you would be FIRED if you left for vacation and left you work undone. It will not get done without you. REMEMBER who you work for or your service to the people will end. No more political deadbeats allowed. Finish the budget!!!

Yes, this is one of those questions that gets asked, brought up, and ignored several times a year. Tired of it. Fix it or leave it. Pretty frustrated with this no work and yet you get six weeks off. 😡

Sometimes vacations are put on hold when important things are not done in a timely manner ....the BUDGET is IMPORTANT. For Democrats: Advised to stop attacking Barrack Obama’s presidency and start working on things that distinguish you from the hateful Spender in Chief ...infrastructure in the US, the environment and gun control would be a start. And stop the in fighting ...

Although this bill has little chance of passing, it’s imperative that Congress is held accountable to pass budgets on time & keep the government open.
