Should Individuals and Businesses Have the Choice of a Flat Tax Instead of the Current Tax System?

Argument in favor

An optional flat tax would dramatically simplify the tax code for Americans who choose to take advantage of it, saving them both time and money.

In the words of Ron Paul, "I lean toward a flat tax. But I want to make it real flat, like zero." Where do you get the arrogance to think you have a right to help yourself to someone else's income? And to dictate to them how much of their income you are going to help yourself to? Diminishing marginal utility is entirely irrelevant - you don't get to decide when someone else's utility is too low and you get to take what's left. You're mis-applying an economic argument and still failing the ethical argument because you are advocating TAKING SOMEONE ELSE'S MONEY. YOU ARE NOT GOOD PEOPLE. YOU ARE THIEVES. Again, where do you get the arrogance?

What a wonderful idea to investigate. But, other types of taxes should be eliminated. I would like to see what the base income includes for the flat tax. Would there be a increased in in sales tax? How would a flat tax effect State Income Taxes? Can't believe this proposed bill lacks detail.

This is only fair. I mean seriously. If someone is making $200K and someone else is making $20K they should both pay at the same percentage. You can't tax someone more percentage just because they are more successful. That's bad

Argument opposed

Creating an optional flat tax alongside the existing tax code would let the wealthiest Americans pay less in taxes than they currently do, it’s unfair.

Flat taxes hurt the middle class and working poor. Only billionaires support this. Gosh I wonder why???

Flat tax is a scam designed to dupe the foolish into helping the wealthy. The percentage they would take from the average citizen, at the average income would be significant to them, while the percentage taken from the wealthy would be barely noticeable. Ask your self this, if you make 30k a year, why should you pay as much as someone making 200k? Short answer, you shouldn't.

I agree 100% with Carl's comments. It's sure refreshing to read comments that are based on common sense rather than the progressive liberals uninformed babble👏👍❗️

With no details available to score this, one is left to guess what happens to carried interest and capital gains. Curious that when these plans are floated there is insufficient detail in the proposal to determine the results. Most of these plans that HAVE been scored result in skyrocketing national deficits and draconian cuts in current programs. The majority of such plans are smoke and mirrors with a healthy dose of "then a miracle occurs" as far as growth projections which, curiously, in all the history of taxation has NEVER happened. If you want a good example of how these plans work out one need only look to states like Kansas and Oklahoma among others. Don't be fooled by simple solutions to complex problems.

Big business and the wealthy have ridden for free on the backs of the middle and lower income folks for too long. Does not surprise me that the originator of this bill is from Tx. I completely support Ticktock. I,too, paid about 38% in taxes. I am proud that I live in a country that allowed me, a child of immigrants, to achieve the right to pay that tax. I realize that some who made several hundred times what I made paid little if any taxes. I will never complain about the taxes I paid, but I will argue and protest with those who take much and give nothing back to this great nation

I would say yes, but it depends on what is included in this tax. Right now, 30% of my gross income goes towards state taxes, federal taxes and social security, and if I made more money, my tax rate would be even higher. If I have to pay 19% on federal taxes, then still pay for all those other things this tax plan would SUCK! But My family and I would definitely benefit from a 17-19% tax rate.

A VERY Flat income Tax is the only proper Constitutional (non-redistributive) system.

Flat taxes on income disproportionately affect the middle class. Our tax system needs to be more progressive, not less. Look up highest marginal tax rates in the last 50 years, and what do you see? In times of the greatest prosperity, to top tax bracket was much higher than now. Or ask Bill Gates or Warren Buffett, who both say the rich should be taxed more.

If progressives feel the government is not getting enough money, instead of asking for higher taxes to alleviate their "rich guilt" they can send a check to the treasury for any amount above their legal required tax bill. Don't require me to assuage your "privilege". You should bear that burden yourself.

This "optional flat tax" would give the already wealthy a huge tax break and shift the burden of funding government further onto the middle class, shrinking it even more and underfunding the government in the process. This bill should NOT be passed.

Our current tax system still promotes growth and success, as evidenced by the existence of wealthy people. The wealthy are doing just fine, there's no need to cut their taxes and throw away government revenue.

No. This sounds like a good idea but when you dive into the math and details you see this would only benefit the wealthy. Piling up of money in the hands of a few people does not benefit civilization so we should not encourage it by looking for laws that reduce the revenues that run our country.
