Tax Cuts and Jobs Act: Cutting Taxes for Individuals and Businesses

Argument in favor

The tax code is overly complex, and tax rates are too high. By cutting rates and eliminating deductions for individuals and reducing the highest corporate tax rate in the world the U.S. economy will grow, unleashing job creation and income growth.

And “pay” for it by cutting government. Cut corporate tax to zero and businesses from ALL developed countries will flock here and create a boom the like the world has never seen. Trickle down is the ONLY way it works(for people who don’t mind working for a living).

"Congress has passed the first overhaul of the U.S. tax code in more than 30 years. The Tax Cuts Act is a powerful symbol of what Republicans can accomplish when they unite behind a positive governing agenda for the country." "But this legislation isn’t about Republicans vs. Democrats. Rather, it’s an early centerpiece of the vision President Trump laid out on the campaign trail. Americans of all backgrounds want a government that’s more accountable, more democratic, and less eager to line its pockets with cash from taxpayers and small businesses." "Returning money from Washington to the people is the clearest sign our leaders can give that they take this responsibility seriously."

This country thrives on the individual and its small businesses, not so much the corporate giants. Instead of sucking he life out of ordinary hard workers and their small businesses, reducing taxes would encourage job growth and foreign investment and by far make our products more competitive in foreign markets. At the same token, by reducing taxes, there should also be a correlation of reducing the Federal government, which was never created or structured to be this large and burden the people with unpopular programs. Those who work hard should be given a better living, but those who ride on the State to give them their money (fully able workers with lame excuses) have created a government that we see today with too much intervention. Reduce the taxes, reduce the government, increased investment and competition from/in domestic and foreign markets, is a better America, not a Socialist State we are now giving hand outs to able bodied people who don’t understand an honest day’s worth of work.

Argument opposed

An argument can be made for overhauling the U.S. tax code to lighten the burden on ordinary Americans, but this bill’s reforms would benefit the wealthiest Americans, add to the national debt, and not do enough to help the middle class.

There is no proof that by reducing corporate tax it will create jobs as the Republicans have stated. This is the same trickle down BS Regan used in the 80’s. It didn’t work then and it surely will fail now, it allows the rich to get richer and caused the middle class to brunt the loss.

This bill needs a lot of bi-partisan work to overhaul the tax code to lighten the burden on ordinary middle & lower class Americans, but this bill’s reforms would ONLY benefit the wealthiest Americans. It would add to the national debt which would give the Legislators the opportunity to get rid of Medicare, Medicaid and EVEN SOCIAL SECURITY, WHICH WILL LEAVE THE ELDER POPULATION IN POVERTY & DYING. There is not enough in this bill to help the lower & middle class. The bill actually takes away from the middle class.

I am really upset that tax deductions for teacher’s supplies are being eliminated while corporations can continue to deduct for supplies.

The most ironically labeled bill of all time also happens to be an awful bill. The tax cuts will apply to corporations and the very wealthy meanwhile taxes are raised for the average American and the debt is increased by 1.7 trillion dollars. This is plain and simple socialism for the wealthy on the backs of the lower classes. The United States was built on a strong middle class, this flies in the face of those values, and is frankly un-American and unacceptable. Paul Ryan and the GOP do not seem to care about the average American, a foreign power meddling in our election, an administration that very likely committed treason and obstruction of justice, or a GOP senate candidate who diddles kids, but if the ultra-wealthy want a tax break by god the GOP certainly gets concerned. What happened to the party of Lincoln?

I don’t want to cut healthcare and Medicare for people who need it in order to pay for giant tax cuts for the top 1%!! NO. It’s just not right. Don’t let the GOP push this through!!!

Many middle class will lose out due to eliminating the SALT deductions while the rest will see minimal tax savings. It is the very rich and corporations that will see huge tax decreases while our deficit soars.

The GOP no longer serves average hard-working Americans. They only care about their wealthy donors. And this tax plan is exactly what they want: more for themselves, less for the rest of us. Vote NO on this tax plan.

Republicans think that they’re really clever the way they wrote this tax bill because it looks like lower income Americans get a tax cut. However, Republicans hit the middle and lower classes of Americans by eliminating deductions for medical expenses and student loans. This tax bill is a disaster! It’s a giant giveaway to the wealthiest in the country. Cutting the corporate tax rate does not lead to higher incomes for working Americans! That’s a fantasy! And to top it all off this bill increases the deficit over time despite Republicans whining so much about the deficit and the debt. Every piece of this legislation needs to be shredded. Congress needs to start from scratch and actually create a tax bill that ensures the wealthiest in this country pay their fair share.

This bill will decimate the middle class and grossly inflate the national debt while giving unneeded tax cuts to corporations and the wealthy. It will slash Medicare and Medicaid benefits, harming the elderly, children, the poor and the disabled. Please vote against this horrible bill.

Breaks for oil companies and big businesses is not what we need. The trickle down economic theory has been proven not to work. In addition, how is defunding Medicaid helping Americans. Please do what is right and help, not hurt.

Stop bickering over tax cuts for the rich. I want a tax cut. I am middle class. I will get it with this bill. People get hung up on screwing the rich. Let’s face it. The rich own the country. They own the govt. they own the Congress. Take your tax cut and smile. In addition, every time tax rates have been lowered in this country the actual revenues collected went up so for those of you who think lower taxes equals less revenue you are wrong. Also, when revenues go up what do the politicians do? They enact more spending bills. Why don’t they cut spending? There is a novel idea.

The new tax bill will give tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires. They don't need it! It will be partially funded by slashing Medicare and repealing the individual mandat. The bill also cuts education spending and mortgage deductions. It'll balloon the national debt that just last year was so important to rein in. Explain how this bill helps the middle class. And don't start with trickle down economics. Even the corporations admit the savings will go to stock dividends. Look at the polls - we voters don't want this bill! And I, for one, am tired of being lied to. Please reply with the truth. Or better yet, vote NO!

This bill would raise the bottom income tax bracket from 10% to 12%. In other words, this bill will RAISE TAXES on poor and middle-class Americans, all to pay for giant tax cuts for only the richest people among us! Not only that, but this bill would end tax deductions for student loans, adoptions, and local and state taxes! Let's not even get started on the fact that this bill would increase our deficit by $1.5 trillion! The only good thing coming from this bill is that it would screw over dumb Trump voters, as they would definitely deserve such a punishment! But unfortunately, this bill would also hurt the majority of Americans who are not them, so I say that we must kill this bill, no matter what!

What a scam! What the hell, closed doors, hours to read hand written notes on about 500 pages. Sounds like the republicans are hiding something within these pages. The amount of time to come up with tax reform should be more than 2 weeks. I hope voters realize who voted for this when election time comes... what a joke.

A tax cut that further adds to an almost insurmountable, unchecked, unbalanced, and potentially crippling national debt is among one of the worst and most irresponsible fiscal decisions to be made at this time. This plan is nothing more than a means for the most well off corporations and individuals to further secure their wealth, shifting the burden of funding this disaster of a country (by measure of the current administration) to the people in most need. Please vote no to this bill, any alterations of this bill, and begin to suggest that those who are most well off have for far too long not taken up their social and fiscal responsibility.
