house Bill H. Joint Res. 13

Should Representatives and Senators Be Limited to 12 Years in Congress?

Argument in favor

We have members of Congress who have been serving since 1955 — being an elected official should not be a career. It keeps Congress out of touch with real world constituents outside of D.C.

Some kind of limit appears to make sense. I do fear that it will have the unintended impact of making congress even more of a rich persons game however. Thus a bill like this plus campaign finance reform would be awesome.

Our founding fathers did not intend our politicians to be life long career politicians and that is why they set a limit on the president. Apparently they did not foresee a government where the president was a show piece and the rest of the politicians controlled the country. Mouth life time members to congress or senate government officials can do and have done far more damage to this country than a term president.

Politics wasn't meant to be a career path plus you lose touch with the American people when you're in Washington to long.

Argument opposed

Hey voters! If you don't like your lawmakers, don't elect them for office over and over and over again. "Career politicians" aren't the problem here, it's a lack of civic engagement across the country.

We already have the right to vote out Congressmen. Let's not take away our right to keep them there.

Voters have the ultimate right to decide who they are represented by, even if that person has served for the last twenty years. As long as elections occur at regular intervals, no individual representative or Senator can amass enough power that it would make term limits necessary.

I believe we should be smart enough to get rid of elected officials who not longer do their job. At the same time, it's getting harder for some to see past the lies.

Just like the president there should be term limits for these officials. They all know this is the right thing to do. Let's see if they are willing to do what's right

No government position should be for a lifetime. Times change. People change. We need a government that can adjust to change, not be stuck in outdated world views.

I don't feel that term limits is the answer to our broken system. I think it's campaign finance that's the problem. I feel that our representatives and senators should be allowed to serve as long as they are doing a good job and are reelected. Their terms should be controlled our votes. I also feel that they should not have a privileged health care program or pension. I think they should participate in the standard social security and Medicare system just like the rest of us. And I feel the size of their pensions should be dictated by the length of their service. A senator who successfully servers his/her district for twenty years should receive a larger/longer lasting pension than someone who was not serving their district satisfactorily and was voted out of office after one term.

In order for Democracy to truly work as a representative government, there cannot be limitations on voters' choices for Congressional offices.

Too many dynasty and career politicians that have lost touch with their voting base and their needs. It is more about p.r. And marketing to keep the job than staying the course. If our politicians weren't in the disarray they are in then maybe this wouldn't be a problem.

I personally think twelve years is too long as well. No matter how good of a person you are that much time in Washington can tarnish anyone. They should be under the same guidelines as the president.

Unfortunately almost 1/2 of Americans vote ONLY on the BEST commercials as they refuse to educate themselves, and w/dems promising the "free stuff" it's only human nature (for a lot of people) to say yea, I want FREE college, so who do they vote for??? And same goes for Main Street media where again majority that watch it treat it as gospel, when their lying, it's to bad folks do not go to other outlets for the REAL news. And speak of favoritism, look at Sec clinton, and of course the left is blaming repubs for witch hunt when it was State depts. Inspector general that requested today's hearing.......

The problem isn't lack of civic engagement, the problem is that our elections infrastructure allows people to be elected, redistrict the state, enforce voting restrictions, team up with massive corporations for future campaign funding, and become an entity to invest in for those corporations. It isn't that people can remain so devoted to their constituents needs and issues for decades on end, its that once they are elected they have the power to ensure that the system will keep them in office, and their corporate backers will take care of financing, and that's a big part of the problem with American politics. This bill will NEVER pass anything, and that just EMPHASIZES the problem with a representative system where money is speech. You don't have to be a neurosurgeon to see the historical trends, and what happens when things becomes this corrupt at such a high level.

AND MORE IMPORTANTLY SO SHOULD THE SENATE. THE SENATE!!! Too many have made careers out of blocking perfectly good legislation on all the issues.

Term limits will provide an instant influx in fresh ideas and a decrease to partisan political gridlock though the need to work across the aisle to get things done knowing that time is limited. Politicians will be forced to remember normal life and the disparities that come with it. With the extensive benefits afforded a incumbent, including automatic name recognition, franking, and political alliances already in place yet not excluding the disparities numerous studies have confirmed, we must take a step further to protect the innocence of government and the republic process
