house Bill H. Con. Res. 71

The GOP Budget for Fiscal Year 2018 and Using Reconciliation for Tax Reform and Deficit Reduction

Argument in favor

The American economy needs a boost from comprehensive, deficit-neutral tax reform and this budget resolution would let Congress use the reconciliation process to achieve that.

This is the first step toward much needed tax reform and balancing the federal budget. This is common sense and needs to be passed to clear the way.

After less than 3% growth for the entire 8 years of Obama administration. More people on food stamps and more people living pay check to pay check with a raise this economy needs more than a shot in the arm. This tax reform is similar to what President Kennedy proposed in 1961 and passed in1964. It is was projected to have huge deficits but the unemployment rate dived to 3.8% . Imagine if everyone who wanted a job is working , paying taxes and wiping out the deficits. If you say this is just tax reform for the rich you have never worked for a poor person then. Who do you think these "rich" people are hiring? They want to grow their businesses and can do so when the corporate tax goes from 39% to 29%. Then there is my personal favorite the Inheritance tax. It is not just for the rich as I found out when my husband died without a will. I paid $17,000 in inhertitantent

Have to start somewhere. Voting no keeps "STAGNANT Status Quo". We need a boost. Everyone is anticipating it. Such a shame if it doesn't happen due to stubbornness!

Argument opposed

Tax reform could be beneficial, but this budget resolution opens the door for Republicans to produce and pass an overhaul of the tax code in a partisan manner that excludes Democrats.

Stop pushing burden onto middle class and taking away support for the poor just to make rich people pay less taxes. This is NOT what this country is about.

Everything I have seen regarding tax reform from this administration benefits the wealthy and no one else. And there should be no resolution or law passed that allows for either party to bypass tradition rules of order in order to ram through legislation. And no CBO score? I am sick of that being ignored. If Either party is proposing and trying to vote on legislation without a CBO score, hearings, and the required due diligence and debate, that tells me they know what they are proposing will not pass muster with the American people and so they they are trying to hurry up a vote before we get to see the impact to us.

From voodoo economics, to trickle down economics, the lie is that giving money to the 1% creates jobs and is a step up the ladder for the rest of us. There is evidence to prove the lies. Lying as the basis for imposing laws pushed through by changing the laws and rules of procedure sounds more like a dictatorship than a republic to me. We are slipping into fascism while #45 creates a storm of idiotic headlines to distract us – shiny objects so that we won’t see the fatal cuts coming. Wounding the very people who voted for him, Russian interference aside, is particularly ruthless and cynical. I want my country back, the country that welcomed immigrants and refugees with open arms, the country that lets us all work toward a better life, the country where the strong care for the weak, where compassion rules and violence is abnormal, the country where everyone knows that bullying is never OK and the country where tax cuts profit all—not the 1%.

Most of these tax cuts go to the super wealthy whereas lower and middle class families will pay more in many cases. We need tax reform that does the opposite, and doesn't increase the deficit. If we can't afford the safety net programs being slashed, we certainly can't afford tax cuts for billionaires

This is an obscene tax giveaway to the 1% and corporations at the expense of the rest of America. Do not support this tax plan. It increases our budget deficit while reducing revenues. The mega-rich and corporations should pay their fair share and not profit on the backs of hardworking average Americans. The president should release his tax returns so that the public can better understand how he and his family profit from these proposals. Thank you.

The complete partisanship approach only adds to the complete dissatisfaction with our elected representatives. It is the basic reason for the very low approval ratings. Time to stop this constant party affiliation fighting and work together to meet the common good for the country.

All smoke and mirrors, just another big give away for the rich, then the republicans will come after social security, Medicare and other programs that benefit the lower and middle class to balance the budget. To my two Republican Senators and Buddy from the 1st dist of GA, we're watching how you vote!

Update: Senate passed a budget to give money to people with no need for it. And they cut funds for essential programs. It’s a sad day in our country GOP = Greed over People This is not the budget bill we need. Too much wasteful spending and hurtful cuts. It is not economically sound.

I do not believe that any responsible Congressman would vote for this budget. It’s time for our Representatives to actually vote as representatives of their constituents and not their party or wealthy campaign contributors. Want to make America great? Then get the wealthy to pay their fair share. And stop trying to make America a one party country through despicable tricks.

About time we get back to putting more money into pockets of the tax payers. It will fuel the economy, create jobs and widen the tax base. Even if the rich benefit! We need this!

No. This bill is not fair to middle class. I am single and own my home. Eliminating state and real estate taxes hurt me and all single people. Doubling the standard deduction doesn't cover those two expenses. Reconciliation is not acceptable. This bill needs 60 vote majority. The lowest income earners get a 2% rate increase. If this bill is so wonderful then a 60 vote majority. It is not deficit neutral It will not boost the economy and once again the upper earners get a great deal. Washington needs to return to regular order and a bipartisan approach. Stop the insanity. Anything this important should be bi partisan

Billionaires and huge corporations do not need more tax cuts. We need infrastructure repair and upgrades, we need to secure pensions for our federal workers, we need to pay down our debt, we need to financially secure social security and health care for all. What makes this country great is our shared civic community.

The Republicans must be doing some magic math in this legislation because I don't know how they can bring the budget to balance given the massive tax cuts that they will give to richest people in the country. They must be planning on cutting vital government programs by an incredible amount which is unconscionable! Kill this legislation! Start Over! And actually have a budget process that puts regular Americans in mind and one that actually demonstrates some understanding of fiscal policy!

We don’t need a tax code that is based on partisan politics, no matter who did it in the past. We must learn from the partisan mistakes of the past, and work together for a tax plan that really does benefit everyone.
