house Bill H. Con. Res. 40

Encouraging the reunion of Korean-Americans with their family members in North Korea

Argument in favor

Reuniting dividing Korean-American families with their North Korean relatives is a worthy humanitarian goal, and Congress should help facilitate it as much as possible.

how sad would it be if you were separated from your families because of a fascist leader in North Korea?

This is a resolution with no teeth, why would Congress not call for the reunification of any families? Simple matter, I say let it pass.

North Korea has been at odds with South Korea and America since the Korean War. If Korean-American families reunite with their families in North Korea, we would begin to tear down sociopolitical barriers between America and North Korea. That is not to say we would share camaraderie with North Korea overnight. Rather, Korean-American families reuniting with their families in North Korea would signify progress between America and North Korea.

Argument opposed

Regardless of what Congress encourages, these reunions are dependant on the cooperation of North Korea -- which can hardly be considered a reliable partner in this endeavor.

Why is this a national, governmental or legislative question? Damn, lower taxes, cut spending, eliminate most of the cabinet; fix what's your business (Art. I, Sec 8)!

Another sound good story. Of course families should be able to meet. But the only thing NK will do is seizes this time to kidnap or accuse American-Korean of spying. Looking for free money like Iran. This is a sad situation for families, but maybe PEOTUS can pressure China to pressure North Korea. Recently, a US college student was caught stealing a indoctrination poster and is now serving hard labor in a NK prison.

More Information

In-Depth: After the end of the Korean War in 1953, the communist Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK or North Korea) has been divided from the democratic Republic of Korea (South Korea) by the 38th parallel -- which separated millions of Koreans from their families. Since the end of the war, no exchanges of letters, telephone calls, or emails have been allowed between North and South Koreans.

North Korea and South Korea have established a reunion program where the divided families meet for a few hours on the border between the two countries. However, the frequency of the reunions has been subject to the political and militaristic tensions between the neighboring nations, and have been stopped and restarted several times since their creation.

In 2007 the Congressional Research Service estimated that there are between 104,000 and 500,000 Korean Americans with immediate North Korean family members. It also stated that only 80 Korean Americans have been able to meet their North Korean family members through the reunion program that South Korea and North Korea have facilitated. The number of reunions involving Korean-Americans has grown into the hundreds, but time is of the essence as the populations on both sides of the divide age.

There is a rather nasty new Mosquito buzzing around in Florida these days. Maybe congress should pass a resolution suggesting it go back to where ever it came from. That would make about as much sense as trying to influence NK by telling them we don't like the way they prevent family reunions. Surely these guys should be able to find some real work to Do?

This is a waste of time unless Little Kim is agreeable to it, And our current administration seems to be powerless to influence him to be in any way reasonable. He starves his own people. He doesn't care about reuniting families. When our Federal government has the means and the spine to get Little Kim to be more reasonable, then talk about this.

Congress keeps inserting itself in items over which it has no power. This is a 'feel-good' resolution only. I'm sure Korean-Americans do not need congress prodding to want to see their relatives in N. Korea. Can you please work on items you do have power to affect?

We Already Have Social Media. DPRK Can Only Decide If Social Media Can Be Used By DPRK Citizens. Congress Cannot Enact DPRK To Permit Social Media.

Limited government. Is there no end to the affairs our government is determined to get involved with? We cant even protect our own social institutions, why get involved with the social life of someone else?

This is probably useless but it has a ring of human kindness--a rarity in the U.S. Congress which leans toward punishment & vengeance. We should encourage the toddlers to be kind.

Congress keep your nose out of higher political matters. It is a sad situation between North & South Korea, but don't push or interfere in matters that don't concern you. No, no, no!

My father fought in the Korean war, was wounded & stayed. If they want to have these reunions IN N. Korea fine. But no N. Korean should be allowed in the USA.
