Trump Ends Climate Change Committee

by Countable | 8.22.17

What’s the story?

Over the weekend, the Trump administration quietly disbanded the advisory panel for the National Climate Assessment. As the Washington Post reported, the group is meant to help "policymakers and private-sector officials incorporate the government’s climate analysis into long-term planning."

Why does it matter?

A notice on its website reads: "Per the terms of the charter, the Federal Advisory Committee for the Sustained National Climate Assessment (Committee) expired on August 20, 2017. The Department of Commerce and NOAA appreciate the efforts of the Committee and offer sincere thanks to each of the Committee members for their service." The 15-person panel is made up of academics, local officials and corporate representatives.

The decision to shutter the panels comes "as the Trump administration faces a major deadline related to the forthcoming climate assessment," wrote Scientific American. In 2018, the national climate assessment report is due, and the disbanding of the advisory panel will most likely result in missed deadlines, and potentially delaying the report.

On August 18th, 13 federal agencies were expected to provide their final comments on a federal report on the state of climate change. The report had been leaked to the New York Times amidst fears by scientists that the White House may try to dismiss the findings, as the Trump administration has repeatedly questioned the validity of climate change in the past.

Richard Moss, a climate scientist at the University of Maryland in College Park, and co-chair of the committee, told the Washington Post that ending the group "doesn’t seem to be the best course of action. We’re going to be running huge risks here and possibly end up hurting the next generation’s economic prospects."

Conservative outlet The Blaze, however, said that the agency’s closing was an example of "Trump is making good on his promise to downsize the scope of the federal government."

What do you think?

This administation has chosen to bury their head in the sand regarding environmental issues. Climate change is real and our experts must have a voice at the table. Put our planet before business interests.

That's it. The private sector needs to step in, continue funding research, so when this cheeto finally crumbles we can pick up where we left off instead of falling further behind the rest of the world.

Former President Barack Obama said, “Addressing climate change takes all of us, especially the private sector going all-in on clean energy worldwide.” Which is why I say that Governments must remove barriers and create an environment in which the private sector can thrive and in which investments in renewable energy make financial sense. The private sector should play a role in pushing for these reforms, which have the potential to unlock billions of dollars’ worth of investment opportunities. It's time for the private sector to seize this opportunity by developing business strategies fit for a future without carbon.

Wtf is wrong with this government body? They are ignoring the warnings that people and scientists are giving out about climate change. People been proving for years that the oil industry is nothing more than a con artist who puts company over others health. The animals are in danger, the forests and Arctic is in danger. If we don't do something, we are screwed! My boyfriend likes his cars and what not, and doesn't quite agree with me, but I don't care, I stand for the environment!

Downsize the government by getting rid of trump's family members that are doing nothing, his cabinet that is doing nothing. Get rid of Secret Service so he doesn't have it any more. To save money stop congress from receiving benefits after employment. Stop footing the bill for trump's weekend getaways and family vacations Put caps on the years these people can serve. DON'T get rid of the few sane, worthwhile things we have. Get rid of trump!!!

I believe climate change is the number one threat to American (world) safety. The idea that science is not an absolute, is outrageous! Denying and hiding the truth is absolutely irresponsible! Climate change should not be political! The idea that republicans choose to listen to idiots like Alex Jones, Rush Limbaugh or Steven Bannon over the science community, is pathetic! It was a Republican who started the EPA, Nixon. My only hope is that Republicans decide they like clean water, and air more then money? Great, the rich can leave copious amounts of money to their grand children who will choke on the pollution. I hope they decide it's more important then party politics. Why can't our politicians be honest with themselves and their communities? Oh that's right, silly me. I forgot the deniers are being paid big money, by Cooperate America and the Koch brothers. They first dummied down America (no child left behind) (lack of affordable access to higher education) because it's easy to manipulate an uneducated populous. Just throw in some fear factors, like "Dems are coming after your guns" which they are not, but uneducated people are likely to believe fear factors over basic facts. Politicians should be responsible to their constituents not Big Money! 2018 and 2020 can not come soon enough. Women and minorities need to run for local and federal seats. The wealthy dems need to pull out their wallets to support them against the lies of the GOP. Above everything, all Americans need to vote! It pains me to listen to young people who don't believe their vote means anything. Oh silly me again, I forgot the GOP screams voter fraud, and the uneducated believe it. Pure manipulation!

This is just another nail in our coffin. To disband this group is going to hinder any progress on climate change. We need a group like this to help government implement legislation to stop climate change. It seems that the only ones who will win are the corporations who now can pollute however they want. trump isn't for saving the planet he is for destroying it. I only hope that corporations will not pollute this planet and go green themselves. These are troubling times.

This is a significant step backward and I can only pray that this is ended quickly with majorities in both houses captured by the Democratic Party and quickly moving to undo this mess made by a failed tv personality. All the voters that voted in chaos, racism, violence, Division, hate, corruption and a slew of other violations of law I hope have learned a bitter lesson; you've been fooled. And as the climate continues toward destruction and many rural and reliable Trump enablers and voters will yield to see the massive crop droughts and soil erosion as a result of the stupidity that they displayed on November the 8th. This is why VOTING AND education investments are important. This entire debacle of climate change is a threat to our survival and to the economic growth of this country. Sadly but irony is that it's going to hurt the very people who voted in this jackass and moron liar. I guess to those who in vain preach the Bible as a artifact that they drape around all republicans regardless how antithetical the book is to the actual candidate: You reap what you sow. So enjoy your chaos candidate. I'm beginning to loose sympathy for them.

Fine, then an independent panel of scientists and other experts needs to be appointed and federally funded to advise the Supreme Court Justices on policy decisions and nominations. They, the Supreme Court Justices, appear to be one of the few legislative/judicial branches with both the power and the balls to stand up to Mr. 45 and his sadistic band of eco -terrorists.

Why is anyone surprised? He campaigned on this and he's in the White House! Who's the fool? Trump or those that voted for him and expected him to do something other than what he promised? I think Trump is one brick short a full load but he knew enough to fool the electorate!
