The Trump administration is shuttering an Obama-era program that allowed certain at-risk Central American minors to live in the United States. On Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) formally announced it was terminating the Central American Minors (CAM) program, which had granted temporary legal residence to nearly 3,000 people. As CNN reported, this means that the 2,714 "minors who had been in limbo as the program was being evaluated will now not be unable to come to the US, not counting the people who would have applied if it continued."
President Obama established the "CAM parole" program in 2014 in response to a large influx of unaccompanied minors from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. As explained by CNN, the “program had allowed children under the age of 21 with parents lawfully living in the U.S. to be automatically considered for parole to live in the U.S. if they did not qualify for refugee protections but were still at risk of harm.” Nearly 3,000 minors had earned conditional approval to enter the U.S. Now that the CAM program is terminated, DHS will begin notifying families that the minors who’ve been approved entry will have to reapply through other immigration channels.
In addition, the Washington Post stated, "1,465 minors already in the United States under the CAM program will not be allowed to renew their status and must go through other means to try to extend their stays."
Lisa Frydman, a VP at Kids in Need of Defense, condemned the decision, telling the Post, "Our concern is that the administration is completely abandoning these children and leaving them in a real situation of immediate danger."
The right-leaning think-tank Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), however, stated that the United States’ "job isn't, or at least shouldn't be, to invite the world across our threshold, ruining our own economy and damaging the lives and well-being of our citizenry in the process. It is to help the citizens of those countries live well and decently in their cultures and societies. CAM did nothing to achieve that goal, and its demise is no loss."
Should the Trump administration reconsider shuttering the CAM program? Or was it, as CIS suggested, damaging our economy and the well-being of our citizenry?

More bigotry and xenophobia from our gutter president. Get him out of office now!
djt is not right about anything.
This is another heartless act by the President and his Administration.
President Trump is totally correct. These are illegal aliens who must be deported immediately. Many are MS-13 gang members who pretended to be persecuted.

YOYO A BUNCH OF REFUGEE KIDS THAT HIKED HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF MILES ALONE, TO THROW THEMSELVES ON OUR DOORSTEP FOR HELP !!!! PAUL RYAN GROW A PAIR !!!!! COMMIT THIS WANA BE DICTATOR, SO CALLED PRESIDENT, TRUMP AND HIS CABINET FOR STANDING WITH HIM, INTO AN INSANE ASYLUM !!! THOSE REFUGEE KIDS HAVE MORE JUEVOS THAN YOU DO, ON A GOOD DAY !!!!!
Yes, we have to shut down our borders.
Illegal is illegal. Obama had no right to circumvent the law.
this man has no moral compass - he is totally incapable of seeing anything past his own self interest - what kind of man can stand at the podium, spewing his disgusting response to the neo-nazi rally in Charlottesville this past weekend, and go from there directly to how he owns the "biggest and best winery in the country in VA - if he can't even speak out against the horrible rhetoric directed at his #1 child's husband, why would we expect him to care about Central American Youth - what a pitiful example of humanity he is
I am lucky to have supportive parents who will love and aid me. These children won't have any access to the love and support of their parents now. The risk of them getting into hazardous situations are now even higher. They'll try to do anything to be able to survive, because they no longer have a home. They need a stable environment to thrive and to become well informed and intelligent adults. Now it will be an even bigger struggle for them to have a good life, because they no longer have a home. So no I do not agree with this decree.
I support President Trump 100% in this! Central American (and other) countries need to take care of their own people! Obama is, like all DemoCommies, completely wedded to the globalist open borders agenda; he cares nothing about our national sovereignty or national security.
In a word, "Yes!"
He is wrong once again. Children should be given the chance.
Yes, we are not the worlds nanny.
The Manchurian is rarely, very, very rarely right about anything. So no he is not right about this.
Yes over half where joining Gang and doing Criminal Acts in our Country.
Trump is abandoning a relatively small number of children and leaving them in a real situation of danger. Why? It is mean-spirited, at a minimum, and is shutting off an important pathways to legal immigration. I am filing this under another example of Trump advancing the white-supremacy agenda.
Yes shut it down.
Close the borders. We spend enough supporting live on welfare, unemployment and retraining to live with all their micro-aggressions.
Our nation has limited resources and sadly, there are millions of hurting people around the world. The best thing for us to do is to help the citizens of those countries live well and decently in their own countries. That is the best way to spread freedom and liberty that we enjoy here.
No, there is no reason for reconsideration.
