A Catholic Hospital That Receives Taxpayer Money Refused to Treat a Bleeding Woman Because She Uses Birth Control
Add your name to the petition below to demand that your U.S. Representatives and Senators require that Catholic hospitals receiving taxpayer funds provide the same standard of care required of non-religious hospitals. (In less than a minute, take 7 steps to make your voice heard. Start below by clicking “Send Message." Finish by confirming your email and home addresses and your legislators will respond.)
Imagine this: you fall and then suffer bleeding and pain because your choice of birth control – a copper IUD – dislodged in the process. Your doctor confirms that your IUD has shifted and must be taken out, but refuses to remove it because the Catholic hospital where she practices follows the Church’s Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.
You’re left heartbroken and demoralized. You suffer internal cuts and increased pain while you search for a non-religiously-affiliated doctor who will remove the device.
This actually happened to a Chicago woman and it’s outrageous.
The religious directives that govern Catholic hospitals are produced by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, not doctors. Yet they dictate the type of medical treatment permitted in Catholic hospitals and forbid birth control, tubal ligations, artificial insemination, abortion - even in instances of rape or ectopic pregnancy.
Like the woman in Chicago, women all over the country seeking reproductive health care from Catholic hospitals are being denied service and their lives are being put at risk because their medical needs don’t align with religious doctrine. And it could happen to you or someone you love.
When you’re looking for health care coverage during the open enrollment period, be sure to learn if the hospital and doctors that will provide your care practice evidence-based medicine in all circumstances. In Catholic hospitals, everything from reproductive care to end-of-life care is dictated by religion, not science.
Enough is Enough! Above, demand that your U.S. Representatives and Senators require that Catholic hospitals receiving taxpayer funds provide the same standard of care required of non-religious hospitals.
By signing this petition, you are agreeing to send your elected officials this message and receive occasional emails from the Birthright: A War Story Impact Campaign.
