The Senate voted 92-5 on Tuesday to confirm Christopher Wray to be Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The senators who voted against his confirmation were Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Ed Markey (D-MA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Ron Wyden (D-OR).
Wray’s confirmation comes less than two weeks after the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced his nomination on a bipartisan 20-0 vote. He previously served as the Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s criminal division during the administration of George W. Bush, and since then worked for a law firm representing clients ranging from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to Fortune 100 companies. Wray will now begin a 10-year term leading the FBI.
With Wray now confirmed as the eighth Director of the FBI, Acting Director Andrew McCabe can return to his old position as the agency’s deputy director. McCabe was elevated to the role of acting director following the dismissal of former FBI Director James Comey by President Donald Trump.
