August 1: Happy August in the Swamp! (no, seriously, they built it on a swamp)

The Daily Countable: Take Action Today!

MONDAY, AUGUST 1st

What to Watch

What Everyone Is Watching

  • What Chief of Staff John Kelly will do next. Yesterday, the former Secretary of Homeland Security, and retired Marine general, got Anthony "Mooch" Scaramucci to "tender his resignation". White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, “General Kelly has the full authority to operate within the White House, and all staff will report to him.” Well, staff that isn’t pink-slipped. Trump ended the day tweeting, “A great day at the White House!”

  • Tax reform. Following Kelly’s swearing-in yesterday, the President met with his Cabinet about how to push a tax overhaul through Congress. Today, the President has a "small business event" scheduled where he’s expected to speak on the need for tax reform. We’re predicting a “taxes are destroying small businesses. I know that, everyone knows that.”

What’s Worth Watching

  • The Senate Finance Committee meets today for a hearing on "America’s Affordable Housing Crisis: Challenges and Solutions." Amongst other things, they’ll discuss the “low-income housing tax credit” program which subsidizes the constructions of housing projects. Watch live @ 10:00 a.m. EDT.

  • Not health-cared out? Today, the Senate committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions holds nomination hearings for a variety of positions, including Assistant Secretary for Aging, Assistant Secretary for Health, Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Abuse, and Surgeon General of the Public Health Service. Expect a question or two about Obamacare. Or maybe not, because everyone’s sick of talking about it. Watch live @ 2:30 p.m. EDT.

The President: D.C.

  • At 3 p.m., the President participates in an event with small businesses, where he’ll speak on the need for tax reform. (see above)

The House of Representatives: OUT OF SESSION

  • The House is on recess until September 5.

The Senate: IN SESSION

  • Debating the nomination of Kevin Newsom to be a U.S. Circuit Court judge.

Welcome to August, CountaCounsel.

"August used to be a sad month for me. As the days went on, the thought of school starting weighed heavily upon my young frame. That, coupled with the oppressive heat and humidity of my native Washington, D.C., only seemed to heighten the misery."—Henry Rollins

Say NO to Trumps Tax Overhaul. NO to cutting corporate tax. NO to reducing tax deductions for taxpayers. NO onetime tax rate for companies bringing funds back to America. This has been done before. Then they just put money in overseas accounts again until another "onetime" tax rate. NO, NO, NO to eliminating estate tax. Trump and his zillionaire friends get richer while the masses just rot in debt and poverty. Trump MUST release his taxes before any tax overhaul is signed. Thank you.

Trump loves hiring and firing. In his own words he loves to be able to say :"You're fired!!" So he dies not waste time finding good people to work for him because he is going to fire them anyway.

The GOP has their heads in the sand about climate change, women's rights, minority's rights, and a number of other topics. When is the GOP going to start thinking a little longer term instead of so short term without any consideration to long term impact? To be a world leader you need to nurture that and have a vision for the future. America has stepped a number of steps back under trump. Is everyone stupid enough to think that we can just flip a switch to rebuild our credibility, our relationships with allies etc? On the home front we need to bring people together instead of driving people apart! GOP wake up! Your party and lack of vision is hurting our country and you are acting against our constitution and the vision our founders had. Hopefully America will wake up before you do nonreversible harm!

Tax cuts; currently our corporations pay the highest taxes of most countries so what do they do they take their money oversees hire workers in china have products built in china! But they also have the most write offs! So effectively the tax they actually pay is very Little, by reducing the tax rate more people will get hired more jobs more cash in consumers pockets. But the uninformed have no idea! they scream no! the rich but the rich! Hey dummies they are rich because they work and earned it! I don't cAre either way, why because I have write offs I own a home and will buy another and will be able to write them off! The people who get hurt with taxes are those who don't own a home one of the only write offs left and by the way why should I have to pay estate tax on property I've already paid tax on? Why can't I give my property to my kids? It's embarrassing how uninformed some of you guys are I bet you hardly pay tax! Before you scream about something learn facts not propaganda!
