What to Watch

What Everyone Is Watching

  • The skies above North Korea and the President’s desk. After North Korea tested a missile that could reach the U.S. mainland, the U.S. flew two B-1 bombers over the Korean peninsula in a joint exercise with Japan and South Korea. As the Washington Post observed, "tensions are spiraling upwards rapidly." Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced he’ll expel 755 U.S. diplomatic staff from Russia in response to the sanctions package that was passed by the House and Senate and now awaits Trump’s signature—which the White House says is forthcoming.

What’s Worth Watching

  • In 2015, the Obama administration amended the Clean Water Act to limit the amount of toxic wastewater that power plants could discharge. President Trump plans to undo this policy. Today, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducts a public hearing on this proposal. EPA head Scott Pruitt and various environmental groups will be in attendance. Watch live @ 1:00 p.m.

The President: D.C.

  • In the morning, Trump swears in his new Chief of Staff, John Kelly. Kelly leaves his post as Secretary of Homeland Security to take over for Reince Preibus, who resigned on Friday.

  • Around 11:30 AM EDT, the President meets with U.S. Ambassador to Israel, David Friedman.

  • At 1:30 PM EDT, Trump meets with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

  • 3:00 PM EDT. sees the President present the Medal of Honor to Jim McCloughan, who served as an Army medic in Vietnam.

The House of Representatives: OUT OF SESSION

  • The House is on recess until September 5.

The Senate: IN SESSION

  • Voting to end debate on the nomination of Kevin Newsom to be a U.S. Circuit Court judge.

Enjoy the last day of July, CountaBabies.

I would like to ask my representatives to work toward non-violent solutions to the problem of North Korea. Obviously, we can't just do nothing, even if Kim Jong-Un is putting on a show for the world, and doesn't intend to move forward. We already have a military fighting wars on two fronts. To enter war with North Korea, would stretch our military even more, and might just invoke retaliatory measures by North Korea, whereby civilians (on both sides) pay the price. I ask that we use caution, and let our intelligence community be the guide here. I do not trust the commander in chief to make such a wise decision; therefore, we need our legislative branch to be bold and stronger willed than he is (which is no cake walk). We cannot simply enter into military action with any and every threat that we perceive or face.

No war! War with North Korea could well end life on the planet. The so-called heads of both nations are children with no impulse-control nor concern for anyone but themselves. We are now a laughingstock internationally, have insulted our allies, and the man who could push the button is profoundly impaired. Old "white" men think sending others to die horribly and that terrorizing and killing people who look different from them makes them strong and virile. No war. No way. Butter not guns.

I would like to see a non-violent response to the issue of North Korea. But with the president wanting to increase our defense budget by so much it seems he needs justification and war with North Korea could be it. I am not in favor of increasing the defense budget or a new war!

Wish we had someone competent in the White House - instead we have the twin of Kim Jung, another egomaniac.

North Korea has to be stopped, but a Twitter order from a dangerously and deliberately ignorant Trump is not the way. It. It needs to be a coordinated effort from a multitude of nations on a multitude of fronts. Immediately expelling all North Korean workers would cut off a lot of their Funding for example. A high level of Sanctions from many countries, multiple nations poised to retaliate if one is attacked. It is a horrible time to be alienated from most of our former allies and alliances. Kim may be the only person more dangerous to America than Donald Tump.

In regards to possible war and conflict with North Korea, haven't we seen enough? We are not the police if the world. We need to focus on ourselves and stop creating "yet another war" in which we lose more precious life.

The Korean War proved to be a huge mess the first time and with troops in Afghanistan still and many other conflicts across the globe, we should not be looking to push North Korea into a corner and start a war. There is too much potential to create a global conflict we won't easily get out of.

WE ARE FACED WITH REMOVING A MAD MAN WANNA BE DICTATOR BACKED BY PUTIN FROM OUR OWN COUNTRY RIGHT NOW. THAT IS ENOUGH INTENTIONAL TRUMP GENERATED CHAOS FOR US TO DEAL WITH, WE DON'T NEED TO GIVE HIS MASTER PUTIN WHAT PUTIN WANTS. PUTIN WOULD RATHER TAKE OVER AMERICA POLITICALLY AND HAVE US AS A RUSSIAN PROVINCE, BUT IF WE CAN'T BE BESTED BY A TRAITOROUS REPUBLICAN CONGRESS AND ADMINISTRATION, THEN HE WANTS TRUMP HIS DOG TO INSTIGATE A WAR WITH NORTH KOREA, TO GET CHINA IN ON A WAR WITH US, TO BRING US TO HEEL. WHAT BETTER WAY TO CUT THE LEGS OUT FROM UNDER A GIANT OF A NATION LIKE AMERICA, THAN WHAT TRUMP IS DOING !!! ALL WHILE GETTING MOST PEOPLE TO BELIEVE HE IS STUPID OR INSANE SO HE CAN BUY TIME WHILE WE ARE CONFUSED ABOUT HIS INTENT !!! TRUMP IS RIGHT, HE HAS GOTTEN A LOT DONE, IN ONLY SIX MONTHS, FOR PUTIN'S POLITICAL TAKE OVER OF AMERICA. HE HAS EFFECTIVELY GUTTED THE STATE DEPARTMENT, SOWN CONFUSION IN THE MILITARY AND HIS ADMINISTRATION, ALL GOVERNMENTAL DEPARTMENTS, POLARIZED THE ELECTORATE, SOWN FEAR AND TREPIDATION AND DISCORD AMONGST THE PEOPLE FROM FEARING FOR OUR OWN LIVES OR OUR LOVED ONES LIVES BECAUSE OF LACK OF HEALTH CARE TO OUR IMMIGRATION STATUS, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, RACE, PROFILING ETC. HE HAS REVERSED ENVIRONMENTAL AND EDUCATIONAL PROTECTIONS, CIVIL RIGHTS, TO NAME JUST A FEW. YES TRUMP HAS DONE A LOT IN JUST SIX MONTHS !! FAR MORE THAN ANY OTHER PRESIDENT IN HISTORY, FOR PUTIN !!!! HE OUGHT TO TAKE A BOW FOR HIS GOOD WORK THAT'S MAKING AMERICA A GREAT, RUSSIAN PROVINCE !!!

Senator Young. Hoosiers will not forget your strict vote along party lines regarding the attempted dismantling of ACA. It's time to start working across the aisle with Democrats for the good of the American people. We are overworked & our incomes are flat. We are tired of the drama & lies out of the executive branch. We are just trying to get to retirement with affordable health insurance.

We say rest in peace but how do we live in peace? Just because another country is aggressive or has a less than sane leader does not mean we have to be. Let's be a better example. De-escalate tensions with Korea.

War is not the answer. trump keeps on tweeting aggressive statements to North Korea maybe he should just leave it to the professionals like the military to figure out how to handle this. I'm afraid of what he is going to do to antagonize North Korea even more. We cannot have a nuclear war it will destroy America and the whole planet. Please get rid of trump and his goons. We need someone in office who can handle this type of problem

I would be very alert to North Korean activity. I would have a military action in place that will inflict unrepairable damage to the military threat of the North. Most importantly I would not fail to have added support for the security of the South in a confirmed joint operation from those who are subject to the immediate threat. At all cost I would avoid boots on the ground. This plan must be precise and completely secret until it happens. The Media definitely doesn't need to no anything until after the fact or else it will fail and be devastating to the success of the mission, which would cause unacceptable collateral damage. Also I think we cannot fail to have a plan of disengagement to pull the attack forces back to a safe zone for continued observation. We must be able to take out any missile launchers in order to insure our security and that of those in harm's way. If this is not achieveable then we should do what we are doing nothing! Something else to consider, I do not believe North Korea is doing all of the activity we have seen completely on their own. Beware!

Could it be possible that Russia & China would like to see USA & North Korea at war seems to me that would have us fighting to fronts. As my Dad always said when your hand is in a Lions mouth work it easy until you get it out!! Just saying.
