Changes to the seasonal H-2B visa program by the Trump administration have left crab houses in Maryland without seasonal crab pickers — a majority of whom are from Mexico — after few Americans responded to the unfilled openings, owners told The Washington Post.
The details: The administration's decision to change the H-2B system from first-come, first-served to a lottery forced many crab houses to lose out on their seasonal foreign workers, causing them to lose customers and profit as vendors turn to businesses with more reliable supply. A spokesman at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, which administers the H-2B program, told the Post that the agency has been "focused on ensuring the integrity of the immigration system and protecting the interests of U.S. workers."

At those that judge the employers for not paying a ‘decent wage’, this is their reality. There are so many employers who rely on migrant workers. They are willing to work hard at a low wage; those jobs that Americans view as beneath them. These are jobs that migrant workers count on to survive. Employers cannot pay minimum wage and turn a profit. So while you sit in your AC, having three square meals plus a day, you cannot judge the reality of other industries that need migrant workers. #45 is willing to have Americans to go out of business, to allow thousands or more go hungry, in order for him to beat his chest, red face shouting ‘I am the best’ whatever is the topic of the day. His reality is that he filed bankruptcy four times; he was the reason why many American companies went out of business as he hid behind his bankruptcy lawyers. Our country will fall under the same reality if #45 is not stopped.
Hire American citizens plain and simple. Don't even act like no one wants the work.
It’s up to businesses to secure employment, not the governments job to regulate that. The business should have diversified their employee base rather than hiring a very specific group of folks, especially if that group of people are subject to visa revocation.
No. Are there any businesses that trump isn't harming with his racism?
You know how to hire enough Americans? Raise your damn wages high enough and you’ll have enough Americans. Countable your bias is showing. Why don’t you talk about one of that hundreds of thousands of businesses HELPED by Trumps policies?
He is killing America. Let people get visa to work on this country. He has these folks working on his vineyard and at his resorts. Let the rest of the USA have the same privilege. Stop trump now
How can you pick on Donnie, he’s done more to further the racist hate agenda of narrow minded whites than anyone.
Trump is allowing his xenophobia to cloud his judgement in everything else. Foreigners enrich our country.
They just put out Pelosi comments on why they want too push illegals in they want as she stated their vote. Some States are even giving Drivers license with voting rights attached now that is fixing a election. Our voting laws are being tampered with so too secure votes. When will you people stand up and stop this vote tampering. We have dead people and illegals voting and once done forgotten about till next election. We need voters ID with thumb print that with a passport gives you the right too vote. All 50 States should have this to safe guard our votes.
Well if the Socialistic Democrats have their way their will be no need for visas anymore cause we will let everyone in anytime from anywhere and stay as long as they want OPEN BORDERS,
A genuine free market solves a lot of issues! While true that raising wages will correct the situation to some extent by employing local labor however the productivity differential is quite high. The biz owners suffering are the very people who voted for the moron but have always wanted it both ways - cheap labor / no immigration / segregation etc and what they can’t wrap their heads around is you can’t have best of both worlds. If we are so concerned about extreme immigration waves we should NOT have disturbed the countries south of the border by a) propping up dictators leading to oppression and instability b) creating a huge money opportunity through demand for drugs c) not investing in manufacturing and human development in south of the border countries and putting all of it in China .... so ALL of these imbalances are of our own creation and the onus is on us to UNWIND these positions versus trying to blame it on others!
The “guest worker” program should be implemented. The employers should bring in seasonal workers on their dime and assume responsibility for the worker’s departure upon completion of their assignment. Large fines would ensure proper management. Bring in a bus with 100 temporary workers. Send out a bus with 100 workers upon completion. If only 99 leave, leave $20,000 on the empty seat.
Trump administration have left crab houses in Maryland without seasonal crab pickers — a majority of whom are from Mexico — after few Americans responded to the unfilled openings. Most Americans don’t want to do that job, no matter what the pay. People at the store feel the are paying too much. I don’t see a problem, Maryland voted for Trump. Need to watch what you wish for. Coal industry found out one thing the amount of coal used is less and less and only the right coal to make steel is used. There is only so much steel needed. If we lower your standard low enough, we’ll meet them. By the way Trump need the H2-B’s at his golf course.
H-2b is just another subsidy- lower paid foreign workers vs going rate in that economy. Why are we subsiding a non-critical industry?
Countable..... Once Again Your Biased Markets Are Showing. 8*20*18. SneakyPete.
Put yourself in the business-owners place, people. Let’s say that 2 people were competing for 1 job opening. If 1 agrees to work for “peanuts,” while the other is seeking higher pay, why would the person asking for higher pay get the job? Perhaps the more costly person is extremely more learned at getting the job done. In that case, I could understand them landing the job. Bottom line...The more financially-beneficial applicant wins.
Seasonal workers are good for the economy. Why would you mess with that system? If it's legality you are concerned about, then why would you make it illegal to come here for work? Of course, it's not just legality. It's racism. And those who say they are worried about jobs aren't willing to do the work, or pay more for the food that is impacted. You can't have it all. Guess we will all have to learn this the hard way.
No surprise that Trump’s decisions again screwed the American workers and small businesses. I have one question: was Trump’s request for H-2B visas also part of the lottery and therefore denied, or was he exempt?
Another Trump inability to understand businesses in our economy.
Send a bill for lost business to 45 and his spawn.
