What You Should Know About Trump's (New) Nominee to Head the FBI

by Countable | 7.11.17

President Trump’s new pick to head the FBI is Christopher Wray, a career prosecutor from the Justice Department and assistant attorney general under President George W. Bush.

Wray’s nomination is big news in Washington, especially given the ongoing investigation into Donald Trump’s connections with top Russian officials during his campaign for president. Wray’s predecessor, former FBI director James Comey, was fired by President Trump and subsequently testified that Trump had repeatedly demanded his loyalty, while the Russia Investigation was just beginning. Comey testified that President Trump had told him, "I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go," referring to then National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, who has since resigned. “He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go,” Comey reported Trump as saying.

Christopher Wray’s confirmation hearing before a senate committee is scheduled for this Wednesday. He is known and respected in Washington, having led the criminal division of the Justice Department, and, according to his biography, "helped lead the Department’s efforts to address the wave of corporate fraud scandals and restore integrity to U.S. financial markets." President Trump hails Wray’s record and said he would “again serve his country as a fierce guardian of the law and model of integrity once the Senate confirms him to lead the FBI.”

Some of his private clients, though, are sure to raise eyebrows about the nomination. Wray is currently a partner at the Washington law firm of King & Spalding, which represents Russia state-owned oil companies Rosneft and Gazprom. Wray also represented New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a Republican, in the scandal that’s become known as "Bridgegate." Christie’s top aides were found guilty of shutting down a busy bridge into New York City as an act of political revenge against a local Democratic mayor.

Wray’s confirmation hearing is likely to have a Russia-sized cloud hanging over it. Some lawmakers worry about his ability to maintain independence from the White House, as the investigation into ties between the Trump administration and Russia continue.

What do you think of Trump’s FBI director appointee, Christopher Wray? How important to you is the investigation into contacts between Trump’s presidential campaign and Russian officials? Hit the Take Action button and tell your Reps!

Mr Wray's nomination should be voted down due to his law firms connection to Russian business and government. This position now, more then ever, needs someone with no connections to Russia if any sense of impartiality is to be had. Thank you

We have all the cloud of doubt we need regarding Trump-Russia connections. We also have no need for someone who may not be able to stand up to Trump. Too important a position.

There must be someone who's qualified, principled, and NOT already connected to Russia; offer the job to them.

I think Republicans and Democrats alike need to get serious and do something about the extent of influence the Russians have on this administration! And that would include making sure that whoever is appointed to head the FBI has absolutely NO connections with Russia.

This guy should never be confirmed. How many people in this Administration are going to slide by who have a relationship with Russia? Withhold the appointment and any new appointments until the cloud over Trump and Russian involvement in our government. This is no longer about Russian hacking it is now about Russian involvement in the operation and persons within our government. The Russians may have failed to hack ballots but hit a gold mine with the Trump Campaign and Administration.

Senators Flake and McCain: There is, to paraphrase from watergate, a Russian cancer growing on this presidency. There should be no confirmation hearing for a new FBI director until the Russia investigation is over. We can't have a tainted president nominating anyone until we know the truth. Do your jobs and uphold your oath to protect and defend the constitution, it certainly is under assault from the administration and supporting any Trump nominees at this time would be unwise.

At this point I don't want anyone with any type of tie or interests with Russia having any office, ESPECIALLY THE FBI. At what point is D.C. going to address the fact our Nation is a mess and it's all about Russia Trump and other people trying to destroy our democracy. This guy has ties to our enemies so...NO.

It is my opinion that for the good of this country anyone nominated with any attachment to Russia must be voted down. We are as a country so mired in scandal with Russia that we may not come out of this administration as a democracy. The slightest whiff of Russia on a nomination must invalidate it. The second reason to vote no is his involvement with Chris Christie and the Bridgegate scandal. For once it would be nice to have a clean nominee especially for this position. I urge you to vote no.

Mr Wray's nomination should be voted down due to his law firm's connections to Russian business and government. This position now, more than ever, needs someone with no connections to Russia, so that the American people will be able to trust the findings.

President Trump’s new pick to head the FBI, Christopher Wray, has connections to Russia. In order to maintain impartiality, any nominee for this position should be free of any connection to Russia. Please do not support or vote for Wray's nomination for director of the FBI.

Vote no on Mr Trump's latest nomination to head the FBI. There must be no more nominations with even the slightest suggestion of an attachment to Russia associated with them. We are so mired in Russian politics and scandals we may be cleaning out cabinet members, Congressmen and Bureau Chiefs for years. No more nominees with partisan agendas, scandalous pasts, or ties to Russia, discrimination or misogyny. Only clean nominees should be presented and voted on from now on. Vote no.

Wray's firm's ties with Rozneft & Gazprom disqualify him to head the FBI. We need someone beyond reproach for this job.

We should not approve a new head of the FBI until the Russia investigation is done. Trump continues to do what he wants without any consequences. He is turning this country into a dictatorship.

Trump, being a criminal should not be allowed to make any more appointments of any kind as he is a traitor who cannot be trusted in any way whatsoever. If he were you or I he would be in jail!

The appearance of impropriety is huge here. If President Obama or Clinton had made a nomination this clearly troubling, the Republican outcry would be deafening. This is the exact opposite of "draining the swamp". Please oppose this.

The nomination of Wray to head the FBI must be stopped. Another person with ties to Russia, wtf is going on here? Will we be learning to speak Russian before this idiot in the White House is done?
