House to Vote on $695 Billion Defense Authorization, Water Projects Next Week

by Countable | 7.7.17

Congress will be back at the Capitol next week following their Fourth of July recess, and the House has two bills on its schedule that’ll have the attention of defense hawks and people affected by drought in California or other western states.

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2018 would authorize $695 billion on military spending for the upcoming fiscal year. That would be used to grow the size of the armed forces by about 87,000 personnel, enable the acquisition of new technologies like the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter while upgrading existing weapon systems, and give all military personnel a 2.4 percent pay raise.

The Gaining Responsibility on Water (GROW) Act would restore water deliveries to California’s Central Valley Project that had been cut off, make the Bureau of Reclamation the "one-stop shop" for water storage project permits, and enact other reforms aimed at accelerating construction of new dams and reservoirs.

If cities don't have clean drinking water, roads and bridges are in terrible shape and millions don't have access to affordable healthcare or education, how can we afford $695 billion on defense spending? This is reckless spending.

Let's not spend more on the military. Why don't we spend more at home? Rebuild infrastructure. Medicare for All. Clean energy. That's a good start!

So we need to spend 2/3 of a trillion dollars on defense (when we already have the strongest military on the planet), but we can't fund healthcare or education? How do our leaders not see this is an issue?!

Please vote no on authorizing more money for defense. While I have no problem with more pay for soldiers, we spend way too much on expanding our military at the expense of a solid economy and domestic spending.

Trump should not be allowed to implement his agenda while under investigation on several fronts. We need infrastructure not profiteers of war.

How about maybe we make sure our citizens have safe food water and shelter and adequate health care before we go inflating our already oversized military?

There is no rational reason for defense spending to be that high. Cities do not have drinking water that is clean. People are losing health care and the safety net is being dismantled. The priorities are wrong. Vote no

What are we supposed to defend when the nation's infrastructure is crumbling, our water is undrinkable, our national parks are turned into oil fields and mines, our public educational system is under attack, our air is unbreathable, our freedoms are sacrificed to corporate greed, and our middle class is slowly destroyed.

I bet the defense budget could be $685 billion. Think of what the education system could do with $10 billion.

Let's FUND healthcare, clean air, water and soil, safe roads and bridges and good education for ALL. This contributes to a healthy, caring society. This creates jobs. More money on defense promotes destruction, famine, poverty, pollution, disease and death. You have to know this you are not stupid. VOTE NO on more money for defense. If you feel everyone in the U.S. has the same opportunities you do, you are NOT representing your constituents and need to GO OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE!

Can we please focus on issues within our country rather than the military industrial complex?! Homeless citizens, children in need, infrastructure, veteran needs, poverty, health care and social reform that are in dire need of funding should be addressed before the largest military in the world continues to expand. Can we please address our country's severe internal issues before we have to dominate the rest of the world with brute force?!

We already spend more on defense than China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, India, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Germany combined. While I support increasing wages for our troops, we do not need to continue pouring money into defense when our infrastructure is crumbling around us.

The more we spend on defense the more wars we get in. Let's work on peace and maybe we can get more of it. Negative feedback/projects/ spending has negative consequences . Positive feedback/projects/spending has positive consequences like PEACE!

We should be spending more money on our own citizens instead of funding an out of control war machine. We need to fund healthcare, infrastructure, renewable energy, and climate change projects.

Please vote for this bill. Our President is probably going to involve us in a major war so we need to be ready.
