Does the U.S. Military Need a Space Force?

by Countable | Updated on 9.18.18

What’s the story?

  • Vice President Mike Pence announced on Thursday that “establishing the Space Force is an idea whose time has come."
  • Also known as the “Space Corps,” this branch would be tasked with protecting America, and American assets, from threats occurring beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
  • Speaking alongside Defense Secretary James Mattis at the Pentagon, Pence said the Defense Department has begun the process of creating the Space Force as the sixth branch of the armed forces by 2020.
"As President Trump has said, in his words, it is not enough to merely have an American presence in space—we must have American dominance in space. And so we will," Pence said. "Space is, in his words, a war-fighting domain just like land and air and sea."
  • Pence added, "History proves that peace only comes through strength, and in the realm of outer space, the United States Space Force will be that strength in the years ahead."
  • The Defense Department released a 15-page report outlining the phases of creating the new branch. The report said the Pentagon plans to "usher in a new age of space technology" in order "to deter and if necessary degrade, deny, disrupt, destroy, and manipulate adversary capabilities to protect U.S. interests, assets, and way of life."

What do you think?

Congress would have to approve the creation of a new military branch.

Do you think the U.S. should establish a Space Force within the military? Should the Pentagon consider commercial space options instead? Does America need a military presence in space? Hit the Take Action button and tell your Reps.

NO!!! We have the air force for that already!!! Defense spending is already ridiculous! We do NOT need yet another redundant government agency! Lets spend the money on affordable housing, or feeding the starving children, or anything that is NOT just another ‘big gun’ for Trump to wave i our faces.

Absolutely not! We don't even take care of the military members we currently have.

Technically, we already have a space force. It's called the Air Force. They've got their own unmanned Shuttle, and conduct a wide variety of top secret defense oriented missions in space. In fact, given the innovations happening around space related industries and defense, it's easy to imagine Space related defense becoming an increasingly significant role for our military - maybe even supplanting the Air Force.

Humankind needs to move away from its "warring", or "warfaring", mentality/mindset. Having said that, we do need to be prepared to successfully protect and defend ourselves, from any and all entities, who may possibly seek to harm humanity (our collective being) as a whole.

Space is, by international law, a non-militarized place. Not that law means anything to 45 and his Dancing Trumpanzees.

We are nowhere near needing protection in space, for Pete's sake we've only been to the moon, what is there to protect? And why would wars over the earth be fought in space? On top of all this we're already spending an insane amount on being the world's police, we don't need this financial burden.

For all the same reasons we need a Navy. Space is a source of unlimited resources that are the future of this country and our world, not to mention the Security implications. Who needs nuclear weapons when you can accomplish the same destruction by dropping a rock from orbit? For our security, for our future we MUST have a Space Force. If we allow ourselves to be boxed in by hostile nations or ideologies we will NEVER recover. Imagine the ecological benefits of moving lithium mining alone out of the Earth's biosphere. No more strip mines, no more industrial runoff in our water, unlimited solar energy unaffected by weather, think of the planet.

.... seriously? Unless clone troopers, light sabers and armored battle stations the size of small moons are involved, the answer is a resounding NO. The USAF and NASA already perform the duties that these prolific time and tax money wasters want to assign to an entirely new military branch. This is just a colossally stupid idea, I can’t quite believe we are seriously considering this whackadoodle bullshit.

Having a person as opposed to science as trump is, putting people in space, is dangerous. They’ll probably be coal fired rockets.

No. The United States doesn’t own, and is not responsible for patrolling, space. I really wish you could stand back and see just how ridiculous this notion is.

So we don't have the money to provide our own citizens with even the most basic of healthcare, but we have plenty of money for border walls and a Space Force? Are you kidding me? No, really. Is this a joke? Is this whole administration an elaborate joke?

How can we have a space force when the current administration doesn’t respect science or education? We don’t need a space force. Especially not when we have people in the US who don’t believe in science, vilify anyone who wants to get an education, and think God will solve all of our problems. Take that funding and put it in healthcare, education and improving our infrastructure.

Yes we do. Ever since Sputnik in 1957 the importance of space, and dominating it has been critical. Missilery has gotten far more powerful in the ensuing decades and preventing an attack from space and exploring it go hand in hand. Protecting the Homeland no price for that is too high.

Yes, absolutely. It seems far out, but if we don’t do it now, China or Russia will dominate space before we do. Talk about election meddling capabilities!! This is something we can all agree on!

We do not need a Space Force! The Air Force already accomplishes these tasks. Trump's Space Force is just red meat for his base. Have to rile them up regularly.

The people in Flint still don’t have reliable clean water and we’re considering spending money on developing a Space Force? Our priorities are insane!

I’m in the military and that sounds ridiculous. Without concrete details how could I support anything that intuitively does not have a need since there is no threats from beyond our atmosphere. Let’s spend our limited resources on the things that are needed first and not unnecessarily spread our already thin volunteer force out more. Let’s keep our military focus on the actual threats, I think we have our hands full with that.
