Democratic Lawmakers File Suit Against Trump

Nearly two hundred Democratic lawmakers have filed suit Wednesday morning in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against President Donald Trump. The lawsuit will have the largest number of congressional plaintiffs of any lawsuit against the president in U.S. history.
The suit alleges that the president is in violation of the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution. It asks that the court declare the president subject to the Emoluments Clause and order him to stop accepting payments from foreign entities.
The president’s business has been placed in a trust, run by the president’s sons. The Trump Organization has pledged to donate foreign government profits from its hotel business to the U.S. Treasury, but it also has a company policy of not verifying whether individual guests are representatives of foreign governments or businesses because it would disrupt the customer experience.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), one of the plaintiffs, stated:
"the litigation was necessary to force Trump to disclose the extent to which his companies are conducting business with foreign government entities, and allow Congress to execute its constitutional obligation to grant or deny permission under the Emoluments Clause."
The plaintiffs maintain that they have the strongest legal standing of any of the groups with similar cases currently before the courts because of their Constitutional duty to consider emoluments.
"We have standing because we are injured because we have a duty to vote," Blumenthal said. “And the President or someone else is denying that duty and that right."
