What’s the story?

• President Donald Trump told a crowd of veterans on Tuesday not to “believe the crap” they see on the “fake news” because “what you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening.”
• In his address to the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention in Kansas City, Missouri, the president defended the administration’s decision to impose tariffs on U.S. trading partners.

"This country is doing better than it's ever done before, economically. But it's all working out. Just remember: What you're seeing and what you're reading is not what's happening."

• Trump’s quote reminded some of a line from George Orwell’s dystopian novel1984:

“The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”

What’s the criticism about the tariffs?

• Trump made his remarks hours after the White House said it would provide about $12 billion in financial aid to farmers who have been hit hard by Trump’s tariffs.
• Trump was criticized by both farmers and members of his own party for the move. Republican Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee told reporters:

“You have a terrible policy that sends farmers to the poorhouse, and then you put them on welfare, and we borrow the money from other countries. It’s hard to believe there isn’t an outright revolt right now in Congress.”
