President to Decide on Climate Accord

by Countable | 5.29.17

President Donald Trump is expected to announce this week whether he will withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement, negotiated under his predecessor, Barack Obama.

A group of 40 Democratic senators are urging President Trump to keep the U.S. in the Paris climate agreement. Their letter tries to appeal to the former real estate magnate with an economic argument by highlighting the more than 150 large U.S. corporations that have also urged the president to keep America in the accord that promises a global reduction in CO2 levels. They’re also urging the president to read the 2015 encyclical on climate change that Pope Francis gave Trump in his first overseas visit.

"If President Trump reads the Pope’s writings, I’m confident he’ll not withdrawal from the agreement," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) told reporters at the Capitol. “This agreement was a great step forward made by President Obama to get the entire world community to work in a coordinated and concerted effort to reduce carbon pollution – all of that would be undone in one fell swoop.”

The president is reported to be torn on the issue, with different senior advisors, cabinet members and members of the Republican Party pulling him in different directions. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and five Republican senators have asked Trump to exit the agreement, while a group of nine Republican House members have asked Trump to stay in the accord, even though they argue the goals set out in the agreement are bad for the economy. The group contends the U.S. gains more leverage on the international stage by staying in the agreement, which is a point echoed by their Democratic colleagues.

"This isn’t just a climate question, this isn’t just an economic question, this isn’t just an environmental question or a moral question. This is a question of whether or not the United States will continue to be an indispensable nation," Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI) told reporters. “Will we step up the plate and lead on the big issues of our time?”

To all three of you. Trump is making a very bad decision both for our country and our kids futures here. Less than 20 years ago, the end of fossil fuel seemed in sight and gas was almost $5.00 per gallon, more some places. Then came tar sands and fracking and thanks to better cars, we have cheap gas again. Everybody forgot. We could think about clean and better energy. Now we have a reverse "bubble" and gas is cheap. America first means cheap gas to slot of people. Coal gets votes. So does cheap gas. But, if you don't believe it's getting hotter, go visit the glaciers of Montana (not much to see) or Canada. I can show you pictures. This is too fast for nature and we know how CO2 and methane works. So, we have a great opportunity, make new jobs and ensure energy that's clean and won't heat the planet. Millions of jobs, will need research and education. We can do that. We went to the moon. Or we can preserve 30,000 coal jobs (my grandfather left the mines 100 years ago, not a good way to make a living),continue subsidizing the oil industry, and sacrifice the world of our children. The climate accord is good for future business and the world. Do not allow Trump to turn the clock back to the early 20th century.

It is unconscionable not to work to create a world that is better for future generations. Remain in the Paris climate accord and provide exemplary global leadership.

America needs to keep stepping up to set an example for the world. Clean air, clean water, and clean food are more valuable than money. The ocean level is rising, that is an irrefutable fact. This is the time to start making a difference.

Please do whatever it takes to persuade Trump to honor America's part in the Paris Climate Agreement. The fact that we only have one planet for all of humanity to live on is not a partisan issue. We need to do what we can to keep this planet habitable. We need to remain in the Paris Climate Agreement.

The United States must be a leader in dealing with environmental issues. Pulling out would be a huge mistake.

This President should not be allowed to make any changes until his investigation is completed. His involvement with Russian Oligarchs that are directly linked to Putin & money laundering is very troubling.

Climate change is real. Over the last 60 years I've noticed a warming of winter temperatures, harsher storms and drier summers. I don't expect Republicans to take much action or believe environmental science but think of this, what you do today will directly effect your grandchildren. If the US pulls out of the Paris Accord we will fail to protect the future environment for our grandchildren and it will be a deliberate and knowing act. The US should live up to it obligations under the Paris Accord.

No matter how secure our borders, we are one planet. We cannot allow the greedy few to take what rightfully belongs to all mankind. The money will do no good when there is no air to breathe and no water to drink. Please, please, please. What harm can come of erring on the side of caution? Are you not conservatives?! Let us then conserve!!

The science is clear. Go to any institution and you'll find all of the climate scientists agree on anthropogenic climate change. Do not back out of this agreement - the rest of the world is looking to us to stay in.

Please urge the president not to pull out of the Paris Climate Accord. We need to be a world leader in the fight against climate change, not bury our heads in the sand.

Withdraw from the Paris climate agreements would be a horrible mistake that could impact us for generations. Climate change is real, and humans are contributing to it. As a voter in your district, I urge you to support the Paris climate agreement and do everything in your power to keep the US involved.

This is a joke right? If you allow this to happen we will have written a death sentence for future generations. We are stewards of this world and a major part of the problem. We need to be part of the solution, we need to LEAD the solution. Don't let this walking ego disrupt and destroy every good thing about our country. Show some backbone gentlemen before it is too late.

Do not let Trump destroy the planet and alienate the our allies because of his greed. Only you have the power to stop him. Please, for our children's sake pay attention and stop passing laws you know in your heart are wrong.
