Net Neutrality, Trump on Defense & More!

by Countable | 5.18.17

Thursday, MAY 18

Good morning, dear Countafolks!

We all could be forgiven for being consumed by the avalanche of news about the Trump/Russia investigation, but remember that other news is still happening. Policy positions are being advanced- draft education budget is circulating around Washington, Republicans are still trying to accomplish a major tax overhaul, and there’s always health care. If you’re not paying attention, you can’t participate.

Get your good shoes on, because politics is a marathon for most of us, not a sprint. Ready, set, GO!

The President: IN WASHINGTON

  • Hosting a joint press conference with Columbian President Juan Manuel Santos at 3:45 PM EST. Watch the White House livestream here.

The House of Representatives: IN SESSION

The Senate: IN SESSION

  • Vote on the confirmation of Rachel Brand to be Associate Attorney General.

  • Procedural vote on the nomination of Terry Branstad to be Ambassador to China.

What to Watch

  • At 10:30 AM EST Countable will be livestreaming the FCC committee hearing where the official dismantling of net neutrality is expected to begin. Watch below!
  • As always, the President will be tweeting. Here’s his latest following the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special prosecutor yesterday:

Keep going, Countafolks! Stay hydrated, breathe steady, and take breaks when you need to. We’ll be here when you get back.

"The first requirement of politics is not intellect or stamina but patience. Politics is a very long run game and the tortoise will usually beat the hare." - John Major

Stay the course!

It's time to really find out what truly happened with Russian/Trump collusion. I applaud the direction and the special counsel.

Net neutrality is essential to protecting no blocking, no throttling and no paid prioritization and it ensures similar access to information for people of different socio-economic status. Repealing net neutrality removes those protections. Without neutrality, high speed internet for enternainment could be prioritized over education for instance. Also Internet service providers could charge premium fees to provide special access to public libraries benefiting the richest among us. Net neutrality promotes freedom of choice as ISPs cannot obstruct or incentivize specific sites or content over others. Net neitrality promotes a level playing field for competing companies. Please contact the FCC and provide your comments.

US citizens are not for repealing net neutrality. This is a move by ISP and rich investors to increase their profit margins and at the same time limit information access. If net neutrality laws are repealed the cost of access will increase tremendously because of the many ways that structure of the internet can be modeled and I must believe that the cost will be as high as the market will allow. This means that the poorest will again be locked out. Keep the net neutrality and make it available to everyone.

I fully support the appointment of independent counsel. Our Democracy is on the cusp of disaster. An old bit of wisdom says that when standing at the edge of a cliff, progress isn't taking another step forward, but taking two step back and assessing a better path.

Congress should tread lightly during this turbulent time. Keep the good of the people in the forefront and hang on to your seats, we are in for a hell of a ride with this unstable administration. You had your chance and couldn't work together, now Mr. Mueller will take care of the crimes, congress, please now work together, protect the people and the health of the country.

Net Neutrality is the bedrock foundation on which our entire digital economy is built. The FCC must maintain rules that safeguard this free space so that all Americans have equal access to digital spaces and the content they want to consume or create! ISPs should not get to decide which data is important and which is not. Please help protect our Net Neutrality rules!

It is important to remember the internet has been and should always be neutral to help spur innovation and continue the entrepreneurial spirit. To tip the scale towards established corporate entities will not only harm progress but is anti-capitalist.
