Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has ordered the appointment former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special counsel to lead the Dept. of Justice’s probe into Russia’s attempts to influence the 2016 presidential election.
(See also: What's an Independent Special Prosecutor?)
Rosenstein, serving as the acting attorney general because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the Russia probe, offered the following statement:
"In my capacity as acting attorney general I determined that it is in the public interest for me to exercise my authority and appoint a special counsel to assume responsibility for this matter. My decision is not a finding that crimes have been committed or that any prosecution is warranted. I have made no such determination. What I have determined is that based upon the unique circumstances, the public interest requires me to place this investigation under the authority of a person who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command.”
Mueller, who has resigned from his law practice to avoid conflicts of interest, served as FBI Director from 2001 to 2013. He’ll have 60 days to compile a budget that provides the resources needed for the investigation, which will be subject to Rosenstein’s approval. He will be tasked with investigating "any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump" and “any other matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation.” Mueller will have the authority to prosecute federal crimes uncovered by the investigation.
Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have expressed satisfaction with the move, as Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) and Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) demonstrated on Twitter:
Mueller is a great selection. Impeccable credentials. Should be widely accepted.— Jason Chaffetz (@jasoninthehouse) May 17, 2017
This is a victory for all Americans who believe in the integrity of the rule of law. https://t.co/WZhuWDBKF2— Senator Jeff Merkley (@SenJeffMerkley) May 17, 2017

This absolutely the right thing to do for our democracy.
I find it very TELLING that it took a BUREAUCRAT to remove partisan politics from this investigation. The lack of YOUR leadership.. your parties leadership and Congressional leadership PROVES that you all care more about your feathered beds than what is BEST for the US... IT is enough to make me want to campaign to replace EVERY incumbent politician EVERY election... HEY good idea ...
Ask for his tax returns!
This is a victory for the rule of law and for the American People.
Good news except this will provide time for Republicans to return to limiting voting by minoritys, denying medical care, trying to privatize Medicare, deny womens choices, protect unlimited corporate political contributions, continue allowing pollution of our air and water, cut school lunches, promote secular education with tax money, mess up student loans, promote guns and silencers, make efforts to increase the number of minority's in private prisons while continuing to invest in them. They can get down to mining and drilling in our national monuments and in the sensitive arctic north slope. It makes the public wonder is there no evil they will not attempt while they have the chance to legislate while Trump & friends are still in power.
Get the taxes subpoenaed immediately!
I applaud the appointment of a special counsel to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 elections. Free democratic elections are a centerpiece of our country; these are serious allegations and I am pleased that they are finally being taken seriously.
This is fantastic news!!!
Finally someone we can trust. What a beginning. Regardless of the outcome I will be pleased!
It's about time! Impeach the president!
Best news of the week!!! Can we start funding this investigation properly WITHOUT White House/ GOP approval. That way the investigation can get the staff they need to do this properly. I know there are several investigations into Russia/ Manchurian President can we get those investigators together and share information. I don't want any GOP interference, they seem to have known and just don't care about our country.
Did someone say about time??
Thank you for asking for a Special Council to oversee FBI investigation. The adults are back in the house! Let's get off this crazy train and get back to running this government by and for the people.
Finally. This illegitimate president has caused enough trauma to our country. His entire administration needs to be tossed out of office, along with any EO's trump signed, any appointments he made, any laws congress passed, the Supreme Court position trump filled and a new election called immediately. It's obvious Pence is complicit in all of trump's wrong-doing as well as the entire GOP congressional leadership.
I could not be happier about this news. If our election was fixed because of Trumps ties to Russia, and I strongly believe that he's got money tied up in Russia, he needs to be investigated and if the truth be told that he is in cahoots with Russia he needs to be impeached. The Integrity of the United States depends upon it.
A good choice of a man with experience and credibility. I'm sure President Trump will continue to whine that he is being picked on...,,what an embarrassment he was at the graduation speech.. but most Americans will probably be good with this outstanding choice.
This is what Democracy looks like! 💪🏻💪🏽💪🏾💪🏿
Okay, liberals, you got your wish. Now, when all this blows over, and President Trump is completely exonerated of any wrongdoing, ARE YOU FINALLY GOING TO STOP ATTACKING HIM JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE HIM?! YOU FIND FAULT WITH HIM OVER THE FLIMSIEST OF REASONS! YOU'RE A RABID, EMOTIONALLY DRIVEN MOB THAT SEEMS UNWILLING TO LISTEN TO ANYONE WITH WHOM YOU DISAGREE. “Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother’s eye.” (Luke 6:42 NKJV) “And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.” (Luke 6:31 NKJV)
The appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special counsel to lead the Dept. of Justice’s probe into Russia’s attempts to influence the 2016 presidential election is a GREAT decision. His record is spotless and his findings are thorough and unbiased. He focuses on the law and embodies what American law is for: The People. Thank you.
I am thrilled that an independent investigation is moving forward. Country before party.
