We've been asking the Countable community to submit their ideas for potential legislation, and we've been floored with some of the responses!
Today's bill idea comes from Jim, and it surrounds the idea that Members of Congress should spend less time fundraising and more time in D.C. working across the aisle to reach bipartisan agreements.
How would you vote if this were a real bill?

This idea sounds good, but I would vote it down on the details. Why can't we pass the DISCLOSE Act? Why not repeal Citizens United? Why not force Congress to wear NASCAR-esque jumpsuits with all of their sponsors/donors? There should be required bipartisan meetings, and encouraged bridge-building...but to mandate 3/4 weeks in DC could serve to further the divide between Member & district. Members need to spend more time connecting with their citizens, not more time being wined/dined by lobbyists in DC.
Absolutely they need to concentrate on their jobs and not handouts
Maybe they would have time to read bills if they were not constantly fund raising.
GET RID OF BIG MONEY IN POLITICS !!!! THAT WAY POLITICIANS WON'T HAVE TO SPEND ALL THEIR TIME GRUBBING FOR MONEY ! THEY WON'T BE BRIBED BOUGHT AND PAYED FOR BY BIG MONEY INTERESTS !! REQUIRE THE DNC AND RNC THAT ARE CORPORATIONS TO CEASE AND DESIST FROM ALL FUNDING AND CONTROL OF ELECTIONS AS LONG AS THEY ARE PRIVATE ORGANIZATIONS !!! CAP ALL ELECTION DONATIONS TO MAXIMUM $50.00 per USA BIRTHED OR EMIGRATED CITIZEN !! SECURE AND STANDARDIZE ALL ELECTION EQUIPMENT TO VERIFIABLE TALLY ONLY !!! USE TAX PAYER MONEY TO BROAD CAST ELECTION CAMPAIGN ADDS AND REQUIRE THEM TO BE FACTUAL AND THE SAME AMOUNT OF AIR TIME PER CANDIDATE! STOP ALL EARLY ANNOUNCEMENT OF VOTE RETURNS UNTILL ALL BALLOTS ARE IN ALL STATES COUNTED!!!DUHHH !!!
People should run on issues and be given equal funding. Get money out of politics.
For many members of congress Political contributions seem to be a cookie jar they can dip into. Less campaign fund raising , more work.
I would support a bill which seeks to limit fundraising time spent by our representatives, and mandates a guaranteed minimum time spent on the legislative work of the people.
We did not elect you to be a fund raiser. We elected you to represent us and we expect you to understand what you vote on.
This idea sounds good, but I would vote it down on the details. Why can't we pass the DISCLOSE Act? Why not repeal Citizens United? There should be required bipartisan meetings, and encouraged bridge-building.... Members need to spend more time connecting with their citizens, not more time being wined/dined by lobbyists in DC. Ad and tv time should be equal and all funding should be disclosed and drastically limited. The money wasted by corporations and PACs is sickening.
I kind of agree with this, but what should be done is maybe have people who work for them do some of the fund raising I don't think it should be totally eliminated but, one thing should be stopped is billionaires like the Koch brothers funding candidates trying to buy the election so they can sway candidates to vote on issues they want.
How about a congressional salary start at $1million and then they have to pay their staff, and have to pay for every word of legislation that they vote for.
YES. There should be limits and all of this stuff will be curbed. Stop allowing our country to be ruined. Speak up strongly.
I would like to see the end to all of the fundraising, political adds and slanderous comments in politics today. I think we could accomplish a great deal with open and free debates by the candidates running for office. Everyone could then see these people in action to see and judge the candidates by the legislation they have stood for and the deeds and ideas that they are running on.
I don't think this proposed bill goes far enough. Too much money is spent on elections. Money that should be used for our countries needs. How do other countries fund their elections? There has to be a better way to do this.
I have to work five days a week and all weeks in a month why shouldn't the Congress? And that is not working lunches or dinners.
First, get big money out of politics
