Hyper-partisanship is at an all-time high on Capitol Hill. So it's surprising to find an issue most lawmakers can agree upon: the safety and security of the four broods of mallard ducks that call the Capitol Reflecting Pool their home.
Duckling update: Ramp in Use! pic.twitter.com/34E6oJOkCF— U.S. Capitol (@uscapitol) May 16, 2017
From the Architect of the Capitol:
The Capitol Reflecting Pool was designed to serve as a counterpoint to the one at the western end of the National Mall, between the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument. Since its completion, the Capitol Reflecting Pool has been a popular attraction – for ducks and humans! The broad, gently sloped limestone coping of the pool, however, has an unintended side-effect for our feathered-friends. Some ducklings have trouble climbing out of the pool or returning to it once out of the water.
This posed a pressing problem for our nation's top legislative officials. And so Congress authorized the Architect of the Capitol, along with a local non-profit organization, to design and build a logical solution: duck ramps.
And so, the means to move mallards in and out of their milieu were installed on Monday. Since then, the Capitol has been atwitter with the ducks' determination.
Progress comes in different forms, folks.

I'm glad the ducks are protected by our government officials. Unfortunately the voters are left to fend for themselves.
🤦🏻♂️ I'm not surprised to see that the ducks in the reflecting pool are getting more of your attention than your constituents. This actually sounds about like what I expected, anything but actual work being done up there in DC. I mean, hell, you even had the non-profits build the duck ramps for you. Watch an episode of The Woodwrights Shop...oh no wait, that's on that educational channel that you guys are cutting the funding from, my bad.
Glad to see there's something worth saving on The Hill; it's certainly not GOP leadership!
Do they need health insurance?
I for one am glad that something can be agreed upon in Washington! Even if it is just ducks. Our representatives need to get their stuff together, just like they did for these duck, but for us. It's time to put political ideology and dogma aside and do what is right and conscionable.
Maybe we can afford those same protections to our environment.
Maybe they are the leakers!
🦆This is extremely important🦆
I'm glad the ducks are safe. That gives me an idea, we can dress like ducks and maybe you'll care about us too.
Great. More d*ck pics.
Wow! Thanks, Countable! That's a REALLY IMPORTANT ISSUE! <sarcasm>
Jeez! Really! Ducks can not even leave comments here. Your constituents are leaving comments but nothing appears to be getting done. Listen to us! We are yelling at you. You MUST put country before party. Independent investigator now!
That's great for the ducks and they should be protected. Maybe the congress should be concerned about the people they represent, we could use some protecting. The antics of 45 just shows how much we need protecting.
They can care about ducks but not about humans? Oh, I get it the ducks won't cut into their profits.
I love Duck! I hunt every fall! And they are delicious!
THE REPUBLICANS GAVE THEIR REAL CONSTITUENTS THE DUCKS, HEALTH CARE COVERAGE WHEN THEY GOT CONTROL OF BOTH THE HOUSE AND SENATE SO THE DUCKS DON'T NEED HEALTH CARE COVERAGE LIKE WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA DO !! THE DUCKS ALSO HAVE $15.00 AN HOUR MINIMUM WAGE BY REPUBLICAN EDICT TOO ! IT'S GOOD TO SEE THAT THE REPUBLICANS POSESS SOME ETHICS AND VALUES !
20,000,000,000,000 dollars in debt and Washington thinks this demands spending on! ABSOLUTELY MORONIC! Are there and ADULTS LEFT?
There are more important issues than a duck ramp
Thanks for the small break from watching the wheels fly off the proverbial cart. I'm glad the ducks are safe.
I prefer to put tax $ to ducklings/environment than to multiple Presidential golf outings and trips to Mar-a-Largo.
