Many Republicans have for a long time tried to defund Planned Parenthood, one of the largest health care providers in the country. Their concern is that, in addition to many other health services, Planned Parenthood provides abortion services. They feel that no health care provider that provides abortions should receive federal funding because the money is fungible, meaning funds that support basic health care services allow other monies to be diverted to providing abortion services.
Planned Parenthood does not receive federal funding for abortions. The Hyde Amendment prevents that, and has since 1976. But Planned Parenthood does receive more than 40% of its funding from the federal government, mostly in the form of Medicaid reimbursements for other types of basic health care.
The GOP health care bill, the AHCA, which passed the house yesterday includes a provision to strip most of the federal funding from Planned Parenthood for one year. About 30% of their operating budget income would disappear, though their Title X funding would remain. Title X funding specifically provides family planning assistance to low income individuals.
Do you think health care providers who provide abortion services should be barred from receiving any federal funding?

Reputable clinics like Planned Parenthood should receive funding. Planned Parenthood works towards reducing the number of abortions by providing sex education, birth control and family planning.
I don't see why offering a service that is completely legal should prevent a health care provider from receiving federal funding. There is absolutely no logic in this line of reasoning.
If you really don't like abortion, that's fine. I don't either. But outlawing or limiting access doesn't stop them. At all. Not even a little bit. If you really want to prevent abortions, comprehensive sex education starting at a younger age and access to all contraception options for all, regardless of income. These two things combined will not only prevent almost all abortions, they reduce STI rates too. Let's stop lying to our kids about sex and then getting mad when they don't know what they're doing.
Yes. Abortion is legal. Using federal funds for abortion is not legal, but using federal funds for Cancer screenings, wellness exams, contraception, and health education is 100% legal and saves lives and prevents abortions.
Yes yes and yes! Forced religion and its beliefs has no place in politics and policy making.
absolutely...no federal funding can go directly to abortion services due to the Hyde Amendment but the clinics do so much more for women and families health.
Should planned parenthood continue to receive funding? It's hard for me to read such a question and not hear, "does sex education and a woman's choice matter?" Get rid of capital punishment, child abuse, and war and then we can discuss whether abortions are murder.
Planned Parenthood should absolutely be funded. No abortions get funded with federal dollars anyway, and Planned Parenthood provides health services to so many that prevent way more than unwanted births. I agree with what has been said before about the useful, helpful, respectful programs that help families manage their own health.
Abortion is legal in the United States. Why in the world would Congress withhold funds from healthcare practitioners who perform a legal medical procedure? Worse, why are they withholding funds intended for *other* perfectly legal medical procedures, simply because the healthcare practitioner legally uses other funds to legally perform a legal medical procedure? It sets a terrible precedent that politicians could arbitrarily decide that some other perfectly legal activity is distasteful to them and decide to withhold funds in order to punish people who disagree with them about something that, again, is LEGAL. Fully fund Planned Parenthood and all other Title X recipients!
Not funding Planned Parenthood is unconscionable. Please stop this exclusionary governing.
Absolutely. Many women depend on the services these clinics provide for preventive and urgent care. Certainly a lower cost option than the Emergency Room.
Facilities that provide abortions must continue to receive funding from the government just as it currently stands. Organizations like Planned Parenthood provide crucial medical assistance to women, men and children that go far beyond abortions. Abortion procedures (based on decisions that belong to a woman and her doctor!) do not receive government money. (The religious right who are against abortions have used this propaganda against the Pro-choice supporters!) The measure to withhold federal funding to all clinics who perform abortions is wrong and should not be supported.
Yes. If you want to lower the abortion rate then you should teach sex education. Not defund clinics.
Sometimes women are forced to terminate a very wanted pregnancy due to fetal abnormality, adverse health outcomes expected for the mother and/or domestic violence. The decision about a woman's body should be made by the woman herself with the truth in hand and in coordination with her Doctor . It is her body and decision alone. If you have watched your child suffer with a genetic disease in both mental and emotional pain you should not be forced to watch another child suffer nor should the child be forced to live through it. Those who want to force women to carry a fetus to term against their will should be prepared to feed ,house, provide educational and therapeutic care for the child produced by the full term pregnancy for the rest of the childs live or butt out.
I agree with Joanne, who wrote, "Reputable clinics like Planned Parenthood should receive funding. Planned Parenthood works towards reducing the number of abortions by providing sex education, birth control and family planning." Abortions will not stop, the just again become back alley, which seems to be the direction this administration is taking all of women's health care, placing women firmly in the position of second-class citizens. I will not be surprised if they go after our vote next, before we vote them out!
I agree with Joanne. Planned Parenthood should be funded because of the range of services it provides. With all the changes in healthcare that may come, it is good to keep some consistency and reliable services. The stress that is caused by having to find new providers is much overlooked in all of these proposed changes.
Fund the healthcare clinics even if they perform abortions
Sure do wish that you Republicans would stop trying to dictate the countries morals or ethics. I think that you have enough baggage in your own back yard to deal with without getting into mine. Planned Parenthood does not use federal funds to provide abortions but it does use federal funds to provide medical care to women that would otherwise be unavailable. It's time that the Republicans listen to the majority of US citizens who support Planned Parenthood and want it to continue receiving federal funds. It's about time you Republicans stopped acting so self righteous and less like Scrooge.
