Absolutely, as long as it is a PAID holiday. Many employees are unable to vote because they need to work and cannot spare the time off or the lost wages. Dismiss every non-emergency job on Election Day and permit emergency staff and first responders priority in line when they arrive. Voting is power. Do not strip people of income in order to vote.
Yes, especially if the GOP is going to continue to make moves to skew the process to favor their shrinking base.
Most countries to have their election day as a holiday, and by not having that, the working class are less able to vote. Either this, or national absentee voting.
Election Day should be a federal holiday. Why? Voting is probably the single most important contribution a citizen can make to our democracy. Yet, we make it a major inconvenience. Not everyone can make it to the polls; especially those marginalized citizens who are often most often negatively affected by the results of the election.
Yes! Election Day should be a federally mandated holiday. Break down the barriers to voting!
Yes it should! Mandatory day off! Even if you don't vote. With these results now it's more important than ever. Make it harder for foreign influence to corrupt election when everybody votes.
DO NOT make it a holiday. Honestly, if you do not care enough, or cannot find some way to exercise your civic duty and exercise your right to vote then you probably do not care and are an uninformed voter. It's one day a year and and important one, if you don't care enough to plan in advance to make time to vote then that's too bad for you and I don't want you "voting the party line" because you suddenly have time off, but remain uneducated on the issues.
Yes but keep the bars open as we all need to drink!
No. If one wants to participate in the election process, there are multiple ways to have your voice heard. People would just use it as another day off. We have absentee ballots, early voting, car pooling services and more for people if they want to vote.
The polls are open long enough on Election Day, especially in some states where early voting is in place, that it is not necessary to declare a federal holiday. This would place an undue financial burden on small businesses and citizens should recognize and demonstrate their civic responsibility
Haha....no. It shouldn't. Please stop wasting OUR money on stupid laws like this!
Everybody wants another paid holiday. "Yes make my employer pay me for another day off. Gimme gimme gimme more free stuff that I didn't earn". Makes me sick. Absentee ballots folks! Learn how to use them!
My friends/family/strangers in line on voting day have been vocalizing this need for YEARS. This proposition, quite frankly, is one of the most 'duh' motions I have seen thus far. OF COURSE you should give everyone equal opportunity to vocalize who should run our country and how. And there should also be the consideration of it being paid time off. I am fortunate enough to have a job that is flexible but not everyone has the job or finances to just leave work or take time off whenever they want. Good golly. It is tiring having to vote yes/no on proposals that really only require common sense and critical thinking skills.
No. It will not increase the number of voters. There is early voting with the results more or less reported.
Sure, but remember that a federal holiday does not guarantee that the private sector won't have to work, same as any Tuesday. Also, schools would be closed, placing an added burden to care takers who would otherwise work/vote during school hours. Come to think of it, many OTHER things need to be addressed for voting numbers to increase. I'm concerned that making voting day a federal holiday won't make a significant impact in this area, and that if this is the reason for the bill it will be wasted time & attention from more pressing issues on voting matters. On the other hand, we could put something in the bill to get rid of Columbus Day... just sayin.
I am a voter in your district. Election Day should be a federal holiday so that as many Americans as possible have the ability to vote.
Even if Election Day is a federal holiday there will be people such as in the service industry will will not be helped. Although a balance with costs would need to be achieved, having polling stations open for multiple days would give more people a chance to arrange their work shifts so that they could go. Another option would be extending times to later at night.
If you vote, you can take it as a holiday. If you chose to not engage in your rights, go to work and keep your head stuck in the sand....
Please make Election Day a federal holiday. This should increase voter participation and decrease alleged voter fraud.
Only for people who vote!
