What Do You Want to See in Police Reform?
Are there any specific policies you want to see in police reform that impact your support for a compromise bill?
What’s the story?
- Both chambers of Congress are set to reconvene on Monday and negotiations between Democrats and Republicans on a compromise bill to address police reform are expected to continue off the floor.
- Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) are continuing to talk about the issue after the previous effort stalled in the hope of achieving a “Lazarus moment” that yields an agreement. If they’re able to do so, it’s conceivable that lawmakers could act before they leave the Capitol for August recess.
- Significant differences between the two bills that have received votes so far ― House Democrats’ George Floyd Justice in Policing Act & Senate Republicans’ JUSTICE Act ― prompted Senate Democrats to block debate & amendment votes on the GOP bill.
- It’s unclear whether lawmakers will be able to reach a compromise on some of the more notable differences, such as qualified immunity, but there are also considerable similarities between the two bills which shows that the partisan gap could be bridged.
What policies do you want to see in police reform legislation? And what policies do you want left out of police reform? Tell your representative & senators today!
