Tensions Rise With North Korea Amid Missile Tests, Military Deployments

by Countable | 5.2.17

Tensions have ratcheted up on the Korean peninsula in recent days, with North Korea carrying out another failed test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) over the weekend and the U.S. flexing its military might ahead of what could be another nuclear test by regime of Kim Jong Un.

While the U.S. military has long had a presence in South Korea and Japan, it has raised its profile in the region over the last week. After carrying out a successful ICBM test of its own a week ago, the U.S. has sought to reassure those nations by sending the U.S.S. Carl Vinson carrier strike group and two nuclear-capable B-1 bombers to train in the area with the regional allies.

It also deployed the terminal high altitude area defense (THAAD) system, which is designed to shoot down short and medium range missiles and became operational on Tuesday. The missile defense system has proven controversial, with China objecting that its sophisticated radar systems help Americans track the movements of their military, and Russia alleging that it destabilizes the regional military balance. Even some in South Korea have expressed concerns that the protection THAAD offers is negated by worsening relations with China and Russia.

Whether North Korea continues its provocative tests of nuclear weapons and ICBMs in defiance of the U.S. and its allies remains to be seen, but the regime could soon face new sanctions. The House will vote this week on a bill strengthening sanctions on those who enable the rogue state’s nuclear program and human rights abuses.

Tell your reps what you think of the situation in North Korea and whether new sanctions are needed using the "Take Action" button.

We have a responsibility to protect So Korea and Japan to ensure our troops and their families that are stationed in the area are protected. We must keep democracy strong to protect our homelands especially with the escalation seen in the actions of North Korea.

Tensions between North Korea and the US are strained because Trump is playing into NK's plans. Trump will put us into a war simply to make the country forget about his Russian investigations and to protect himself. Do not let him do this

Well. Are we going to blow them up or give him a kiss now that Trump thinks Kim Jong Un is "one smart cookie"? Maybe we can have a "Killers Ball" at the White House with Duterte, Kim Jong-Un and Putin to celebrate mayhem and torture in the name of Christianity.

We've been watching this escalation of words happen since before Mr Trump took office. Now, before the rhetoric and glory hallelujah nonsense takes control, how about a competency test. If your into head spinning, your about the call your chiropractor over the extreme changes in position from Mr Trump, which happens Daily! From 'Major Major conflict' to I'd be honored' ... Stopping the madness as we tiptoe around Global Thermal Nuclear War seems like a reasonable request. Is #45 competent period.

We do need to deal with NK this is true. Dealing with many of these foreign affairs takes knowledge of their history as well as ours. It takes Meeting of Minds that are all in line with military might as well as diplomatic skills based on desired outcome of each event. This President has shown himself to be uneducated on any of the the skills it takes to maneuver through the complicated and delicate issues we face as a nation. Every move we make upsets the balance of this world. We can bomb the hell out of Countries but that is not what it takes to actually find solutions that last! This President has done nothing hard or thoughtful. He rewarded those who "stuck" by him with positions, he signs any paper they put in front of him if it rolls back something a better President did. He orders an attack during chocolate cake as entertainment. He mentions nothing, NOTHING of our service members that are being killed as a result of his actions. We are not informed anymore. We need a level headed person leading. None like that in this WH!

Why do countries fear America? Why does North Korea feel they need to bulk up their weapons and make threats at us? Because we promote imperialism and provoke every country in the name of "democracy". We need to bring back our sons, daughters, husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, grandfathers, and grandmothers. We need to bring families back because we are getting into wars that cause us debt and unstable environments. We should not deploy more troops while we spend 1 million a minute, have $20 trillion in debt, and have 900 bases in over 130 countries.

Can't Congress stop this escalation? Can't they gag Trump? It seems that if it takes an act of Congress to go to war, Congress should be able to put a stop to escalation towards war. If not, someone should introduce to the floor a way to stop him. We cannot just standby and watch a president with massive inexperience who enjoys school yard tit for tat behavior take our country and the world to Thermo nuclear war. Our country, if not the entire world's safety, is at the highest risk. I implore our government to stop Mr. Trump before it's too late.

Representatives have a responsibility to act on behalf of their constituents. We DO NOT want a conflict. President Trump is escalating tensions for his own political/personal gain. Please insist he roll back his saber rattling and pursue constructive dialogue!

What is happening now is to mentally ill men are pastoring and being enabled by ego. Why we are wondering what is going on is beyond me we see it every day here we will go to war not on sound advice but rather to insane egomaniacs. We have to protect our young men and women and if need be deny participation in any war with North Korea. War is profitable. I am against profit earned by the death of our young women and men.

I don't know what historians will find among the rubble, but hopefully someone will put together the pieces that Americans shirked their duties as citizens and elected an unqualified, ill tempered, uneducated, crude entertainer for president. Sadly all the world suffered for Americans desire to be entertained instead of led.

    N. Korea is like any other failed socialist state. If you ignore them long enough, either the people coup, or they starve to death. The best action for the US is inaction.

NK is clearly showing it wants to attack us. It also basically has holocaust camps for some of its citizens. If we fight, hopefully it ends fast and we help NK grow like post WWII Germany

This is beyond my scope of understanding. But all I feel and think is anger. Mr Trump will create more international mess for which someone else will have to clean up his mess.

No war with North Korea. Trump is trying to cause events that will allow him to take Emergency Powers so there will be no Democracy. For all we know, he may be working with various dictators to accomplish this. No war with Korea. Work with our Allies to come up with diplomatic means to the end.

North Korea was put in their place by Obama and the world backed his administration because Un is like a powder keg ready to he ignited. Trump has pushed Un and he is crazy enough to try to fire a nuclear missile probably at South Korea who we have assured we would defend. You must back down the president's threats. He should have never threatened Un. However, we need now to show strength and show South Korea that we are at their side. This armada better get to South Korea and not be sent elsewhere. The president has put us in an untenable position with his ignorant blustering.
