EPA Climate Change Site Still Down After a Year of "Updating"
Join us and tell your reps how you feel!
What’s the story?
- In April 2017, the Environmental Protection Agency removed an informational website about climate change. At that time, the EPA said it was updating the “website to reflect EPA's priorities under the leadership of President Trump and Administrator Pruitt.”
- Now, over a year later, the website is still down and visitors are greeted with the message: “This page is being updated.”
What information had been on the original site?
- The page “that had been up, in some form, for nearly two decades and under three presidents” as the Washington Post explained, is still available as part of a January 19, 2017 “snapshot” of the site.
- The original site claimed that climate change was caused by humans, which contradicts statements made by Pruitt and Trump. This included one page, now archived, which cited the following conclusion by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change:
“Recent climate changes, however, cannot be explained by natural causes alone. Research indicates that natural causes do not explain most observed warming, especially warming since the mid-20th century. Rather, it is extremely likely that human activities have been the dominant cause of that warming.”
What’s the EPA saying?
- Asked for comment by the Post, the EPA press office sent the following statement:
“We are constantly updating our website to reflect new initiatives and projects of the Agency. Of course the site will be reflective of the current administration’s priorities – with that said, all the content from the previous administration is still easily accessible and publicly available – through the banner across the top of the main page of the site.”
What do you think?
There’s currently a bill in Congress - the Climate Change is Real Act – that would require the EPA to reinstate information about climate change that was removed or redacted from the EPA website since Trump’s inauguration. Do you think the EPA should restore and maintain info about climate change on its site? Hit Take Action and tell your reps, then share your thoughts below.
